PETA online producer Zachary Toliver talks about his essay on the PETA blog, "Why Animal Rights Activists Must Stand Up for Black Lives," where he describes how a belief in empathy and compassion for all living things can bring about about the real social change people are clamoring for in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.
In this conversation with Emil Guillermo, Toliver talks about how he came to veganism and to PETA. He also explains the reality of the African American experience and why he often feels his life is in jeopardy.

The farm produces about 80 percent of the world's Alpaca fiber supply, and houses 4,000 animals. Dan Paden, PETA's vice president of evidence analysis, speaks with Emil Guillermo about the Michell Group's largest Alpaca farm, and the cruel process alpacas are put through for fashion.

Amid the news of the virus, the media tries to offer hope when reporting the latest vaccine developments. But we are still early in the process, with no guarantee of success. That means the big news may not be in the discovery of a cure, but in the near elimination of animal testing as the vaccines are raced to human trials. PETA Science Advisor Jeffrey Brown says sparing animals in wasteful tests may be the most significant breakthrough for now.

Tracy Reiman, PETA Exec.VP talks to Emil Guillermo about PETA's new ad blitz urging people to question why they are still killing animals for meat. Reiman said PETA placed full page ads in major national and metropolitan papers after seeing how meat companies were placing ads in newspapers misleading the public about slaughterhouse workers getting the virus. And then the president stepped in to make sure the slaughterhouses stayed open. Reiman said if we didn't kill animals for meat we could have avoided the pandemic. Therefore, it's time to fully consider the vegan option. PETA has vegan starter kits available at PETA.org See the ads in question on PETA.org.

Dr. Alka Chandna, VP for PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department talks to Emil Guillermo about the abuses found at the esteemed Cleveland Clinic. A PETA investigator went undercover at the Lerner College of Medicine there and found numerous examples like mice with holes drilled into their heads without pain relief and dead mice in crowded cages. The National Institutes of Health now says it will investigate after it received PETA's 42-page complaint last week. Chandna explains that the Animal Welfare Act exempts mice, but another regulation can apply and threaten the Cleveland Clinic's federal funding that amounts to $100 million.

Kathy Guillermo, Sr. VP of PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department, talks about how NIH's animal testing has been exposed by the race for a Covid-19 vaccine. If animal testing is unnecessary for one, why not all? And how has such useless testing delayed or prevented scientists from real answers to medical questions?
