A gambler backed by PETA won a settlement in a lawsuit that sought recourse when the horses he bet on lost to another who had been given illegal drugs. Jeff Tretter got a $20,000 settlement against a trainer and owner at the Meadowlands racetrack, in a case believed to be a landmark for gamblers who bet on a sport prone to cheating through illegal drug use. Kathy Guillermo, Sr.VP at PETA, and the lead on horse racing issues, talks about the impacts on racing and how it could impact the industry as it approaches the biggest race of the year, the Kentucky Derby.

In this conversation with Emil Guillermo, Laverdure-Dunetz talks about the health advantages to feeding your dog fresh food.

For more than 39 years, more than 5,500 U.S military personnel have joined in a multinational exercise that includes such drills as drinking the blood of beheaded cobras, killing chickens with their bare hands, and eating live tarantulas. It's not "Fear Factor" it's "Cobra Gold," and it's all paid for with U.S tax dollars. PETA broke the story in March and has pressured the Dept of Defense to stop the practice, but to no avail. Emil Guillermo talks to PETA's Shalin Gala, VP of Laboratory Investigations about Cobra Gold and the effort to end the practice.
See the pictures at PETA.org, then take action to stop Cobra Gold.

The USDA regulates slaughterhouses but most times egregious violations where animals are hurt are rarely punished. Fortunately, PETA monitors the USDA's monitors to assure that law enforcement is alerted. Colin Henstock describes the things that would be let by were it not for PETA's monitoring system. As he tells Emil Guillermo, the industry would be getting by with a wrist tap were it not for PETA's insistence that the industry be held accountable for the cruelty that takes place in our nation's slaughterhouses.

PETA's documentary,"Test Subjects" is winning hearts and minds on the film festival circuit. The film depicts three scientists who found the moral courage to leave vivisection behind and cross over to fight for the animals. After premiering at the famed Raindance Film Festival in England, it has been nominated for best documentary short at the Lancaster International Film Festival. In honor of that, we reprise our episode on one of the scientists featured in the documentary, Dr. Frances Cheng.
With Emil Guillermo, Cheng talks about how she came from Taiwan to the U.S. to become a scientist. As a graduate student she did a test on saturated fats on rats, and learned that the physiology of rats and humans are so different that too often it renders animal tests useless.
It's the reason 95 percent of drugs tested on rats fail in human trials.
Cheng talks about how that fact began a new emotional journey for her as a a scientist. She now regrets having experimented on animals but is haunted by her past actions and can't talk about it without feeling the pain of her test subjects.
Cheng now works for PETA and is proud to say she has now saved more animals than she tortured and killed as a researcher.

(Originally released Dec. 18, 2019; Reprised July 15, 2020).
PETA has exposed video of monkeys being used to pick coconuts in an example of the inhumane treatment of animals in Thailand's coconut industry. Jason Baker, VP PETA Asia, says the government is trying to deny the monkey abuse exists. But the video doesn't lie. Already, some major stores have stopped buying Thai coconuts because of the exploitation of monkeys.
See the video at PETA.org
PETA Asia investigators visited eight farms where monkeys are forced to pick coconuts—including those for Thailand’s major coconut milk producers, Aroy-D and Chaokoh—as well as several monkey-training facilities and a coconut-picking competition. At each one, they documented that these sensitive animals were abused and exploited. After being alerted to the situation by PETA, Cost Plus World Market made the decision to stop selling the Chaokoh brand of coconut milk, and Ahold Delhaize and its family of brands (including Giant Food, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Hannaford in the U.S. as well as Albert Heijn in the Netherlands), some of which had been selling Aroy-D and Chaokoh brand coconut milk, have pledged to stop knowingly stocking and selling any products obtained from suppliers that use monkey labor. After hearing from PETA, Walgreens Boots Alliance has committed to not stock Aroy-D or Chaokoh, and not knowingly sell any own-brand coconut food and drink products of Thai origin in their 9,277 Walgreens and 250 Duane Reade stores in the U.S. and 2,758 Boots stores in the U.K. and Thailand, and Morrisons has suspended its supply of Chaokoh products pending an investigation and Ocado, Waitrose, and Co-op have committed to never knowingly stocking any products from suppliers that use monkey labor.

How monkeys are kept in taxpayer funded laboratories in the U.S. will make you scream. After a two year legal battle, PETA has obtained video of macaque monkeys in captivity showing the cruel conditions they are forced to endure. Monkeys circle within their cages, bang on the bars, and pull hair off their bodies as they react to their treatment. Dr. Alka Chandna, PETA VP of Laboratory Investigations, says it's the only life the monkeys know which makes the cruelty even more profound. Listen to Emil Guillermo's conversation with Chandna. And then take action to end this cruelty to monkeys.

PETA Sr. VP Dan Mathews talks about paying his respects to George Floyd by recently attending the memorial that took place in Floyd's hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Mathews, openly gay, saw it as an opportunity to link arms and show solidarity between all the issues he cares about animal rights, gay rights and the fight for racial justice.
Mathews also talks about his new book coming out about his mother. Conversation took place before the Supreme Court landmark ruling that declared that LGBTQ people were protected from employment discrimination on the basis of sexuality or gender.
