  • Ep. 153: Update---Mink Covid Threat is Real in Utah

Mink are the only non-human animals who can contract Covid and pass it on to humans. In Utah, at least one man has died and twelve mink farms have the virus. But nothing is being done to make sure the mink don't lead the next surge in community spread. Jeremy Beckham with UARC (Utah Animal Rights Coaltion) talks to Emil Guillermo about how and why everyone should be concerned about the mink/covid issue. Beckham says a mink generated spread would create a mutation that would impact the effectiveness of the existing vaccine. He's hoping the new governor of Utah will take action to assure mink aren't allowed to breed in the spring.

  • Ep.152: PETA Goal for 2021: Getting Ethical Scientists to End Cruel Animal Testing

What if more vivisectors and animal researchers came to their ethical senses and stopped abusing and exploiting their test subjects--the animals? Thousands of animals' lives could be saved and millions of your tax-dollars would no longer be wasted. It could happen if more scientists followed the path of John Gluck.

As a young boy, Gluck was kind to animals. But as a scientist, he was mentored by the notorious vivisector Dr.Harry Harlow at the University of Wisconsin. Then something clicked. He began to see the animals as patients, not tools of science. Gluck's book, "Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals" has become a guide for scientists, especially of a new generation, seeking to practice a science aligned with their ethical identity. Gluck talks with Emil Guillermo about his ethical journey and admits he remains haunted by the faces of the animals, his test subjects.

  • Ep.151: Winning The Vaccine Race By Skipping Useless Animal Tests

One major reason vaccines are here before Christmas: the research community finally agreed that many of the required animal tests were useless. Skipping the tests as wasteful and unnecessary enabled Moderna and Pfizer to get to market sooner than normal. Instead of a process that could have taken years, two vaccines to fight the coronavirus have arrived in record time. Jeffrey Brown, PETA Science Advisor talks with Emil Guillermo about the significance of this move, not just to bring the world a vaccine quickly, but to hasten the day no animals will be killed in the regulatory test process.

  • Ep. 147: PETA's CAP on "Breaking the Chain," a new documentary FREE on Amazon Prime

"Breaking The Chain" is a new documentary, executive produced by Anjelica Huston, that shows how PETA's Community Animal Project helps animals around the Norfolk, Virginia area, especially the chained dogs in the area. Many are abused, malnourished, and tethered mercilessly to a chain. PETA has forced local and state officials to establish anti-tethering laws. It's a model for the country. The documentary also addresses the problem with no-kill shelters, and why avoiding euthanasia is not the answer to the dog and cat overpopulation problem. Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA Sr.VP for cruelty investigations speaks with Emil Guillermo. See the documentary free on Amazon Prime.

  • Ep.146: Monkey Crossing: Scientist Joins PETA To End Primate Research

PETA has released new video showing the horrible conditions monkeys must endure at the multi-million dollar primate facilities at the University of Washington's Washington Primate Research Center. After spending most of her career researching monkeys Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel found she couldn't in good conscience continue her work at the center. Now she works at PETA and advocates the shutting down of the center and the six other primate research centers in the nation. She talks of her ethical journey and the revelations that made her fight for the animals she used to research. She joins Emil Guillermo on the PETA Podcast.

  • Ep.145: Mink Covid: PETA Calls for End to Fur Trade As Virus Mutates and Spreads to Humans in Europe and U.S.

PETA is calling on the nation of Denmark to end the fur trade after thousands of mink have been found to have coronavirus and passed it on to humans. Sascha Camilli of PETA's UK office says a protest in front of the Danish consulate will make the case that the mink form a reservoir of the virus that threatens to worsen the pandemic. The susceptibility of mink to Covid is also a threat in Utah and Wisconsin. Jeremy Beckham is with the Utah Animal Rights Coalition. He says state officials have not adequately addressed the problem.

  • Ep.144: PETA's PLAN TO SAVE RACE HORSES

PETA has been the leader in advocating the end to the senseless deaths of horses in the horse racing industry. Now, just in time for the Breeders Cup, PETA has announced its 11-point plan to save horses' lives and plans to take it to corporate boardrooms of racetracks across the nation. From West Virginia to Arizona, small tracks often operate under the radar. Shareholder activism has been effectively employed by PETA in the past, for example, to bring the end of animal testing in cosmetics. Kathy Guillermo, PETA Senior VP in charge of the horse racing effort, talks about the specific items in the plan which include banning the whip, use of a pre-race scan, and a ban on medications.
