Top 10 Sports Movies

It’s finally time to do the list we have been talking about since the beginning – it’s our top Sports Movies. And it is such a great list that we had to expand it to a Top 10, instead of the usual 5. So join us as we talk about what truly are some of our absolute favorites.

Goofs: We can’t count. We had 4 movies in common in our top 10 – Remember the Titans, Rudy, Sandlot and Field of Dreams.

Late Nights at Blockbuster

Join us as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Mighty Ducks. We talk briefly about our roller hockey days and Troy tells a story in honor of the purse scene. Byers did the hypothetical math that you all wondered about regarding Gordon’s 198 goal season. We almost devolved into an impromptu D2 podcast but recognized what was happening and stopped before we got too far.

Goofs: Troy was a little hyped up during recognize my face and didn’t hear Byers say avox 30 seconds before he asked to be reminded of the term avox. He then follows it up later when Byers tells him that Julie “The Cat” Stevens’ name is Cat and then we look it up and Troy doesn’t acknowledge that Byers was right…again.

Morgan Freeman Top 5

After spending so much time with him in Shawshank, we just wanted more.

Goofs:  We mentioned his catalogue was quite extensive, but we failed to mention just how extensive – since the two of us were born – 1981, there have only been 3 years without a Morgan Freeman movie, and several years with one more than one.

Late Nights at Blockbuster

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster is a favorite of Troy’s and a first time watch for Byers. We go through our regular awards and dive a little deeper into Frank Darabont, Roger Deakins, and Stephen King. Spiritual metaphors/illustrations is mined pretty well but we could have gone a little while longer.

In honor of last week's episode featuring E.T., we dive into our favorite alien movies. Byers gives us an introduction to “Voss Vibes” with one of his Top 5 movies. We do a mini-dive on M. Night Shyamalan (again?). Byers changed the rules, again, to make a longer honorable mentions list and it leads us down a rabbit hole of basically sharing all of our favorite alien movies that we considered for the list. You could tell that there were a lot of considerations for this one and we really enjoyed doing the research. 

Byers mentions the Alien/UFO Festival in Roswell, which is a real thing that is usually around 4th of July weekend. https://ufofestival.com/    

Goofs: Both Byers and Troy were struggling for names of people, places, and things and we even recorded this one early!

Late Nights at Blockbuster

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster sees us go into confession about how E.T. and other movies freaked us out as kids. Our attack on road blocks continues and we bring up the biggest plot hole that would make E.T. a 3-minute movie.  Troy tries to make the case that this is a breakout performance from Drew Barrymore and then Byers talks some sense into him after combing through one of the strangest IMDBs for a movie star ever. 

Goofs: Troy said that Spielberg dictated this to Mathison during Close Encounters of the Third Kind but it was Raiders of the Lost Ark.

NFL Season Preview

We’re here with thoughts on all the teams – division winners, Super Bowl picks, as well as picks for all the awards like MVP, OPOY, DPOY, etc. And we reveal our first tier rankings. Those will get updated every 4 weeks during the season. So please feel free to let us know who we think too much of, who we think too little of, and why we are completely wrong about your favorite team.

Goofs: Since the season ends in 2023, that’s what we refer to it as.

Calvin returns to the podcast to talk with Byers and Troy about the recent Disney + Star Wars series, Obi- Wan Kenobi. We get really deep into what we didn’t care for but still manage to talk about the many positives of the series.

Goofs: Book of Boba Fett was seven episodes rather than the six that Troy thought. He also said that Drive was a recent movie when it came out 11 years ago…
