VERSE: Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. 1 JOHN 4:1

1️⃣ When we turn on a radio, we have to tell the radio which signal to pick up.

2️⃣ We have to be discriminating.

3️⃣ Radio signals may be a matter of preference, but God’s voice isn’t.

4️⃣ We have to become well acquainted with spiritual nuances.

TAKEAWAY: That doesn’t mean we need to be so “discerning” that we rule out everything that might possibly be God’s voice. Nor does it mean everything that sounds unusual to us must not be from Him.

PRAYER: Lord, give me a discerning spirit and help me to recognize false voices. I trust Your ability to lead me. I want to embrace every word that comes from You.

MISTAKE ON NOTES: FIXED

VERSE: [Daniel said,] “There is a God in heaven who reveals secrets.” . . . The king said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is the greatest of gods, the Lord over kings, a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this secret.” DANIEL 2:28, 47

POINT - 1: King Nebuchadnezzar was in a crisis because of a dream, and Daniel’s life...

POINT - 2: God knew the secret; the question was whether He would share it with Daniel.

POINT - 3: We often seek God’s will on our own behalf, asking for direction and guidance for our personal lives.

POINT - 4: He answers the hunger of human hearts and accepts invitations into human crises.

TAKEAWAY: God did just that in Babylon, and it brought glory to His name and benefited His people. He will do so again  —if His Daniels will appeal to the revealer of mysteries for His secrets.

PRAYER: Lord, You are the revealer of mysteries, and You want Your people to be blessed. Show me Your secrets. Give me Your solutions to the problems around me. Bring glory to Your name by demonstrating Your goodness to those who do not yet know You.

POINT - 1: “I have declared again and again how unfailing My words are. I have assured you that I cannot lie."

PRAYER: Lord, You are the God of all truth. Your words aren’t opinions, suggestions, or speculations. They are fact. Rock-solid certainties. Give me the faith to anchor myself to them and never be moved.

POINT - 1: I thought I had blown it...

POINT - 2: Had I forfeited my promise too by yelling to God, "I quit! Take me off this crazy project?

POINT - 3: As my wife, Michelle would share with you...

POINT - 4: Stop doubting and to trust Him, that He...will provide.

TAKEAWAY: God does not withdraw His promises, even when we think we’ve missed them. He encourages us to the end.

PRAYER: Lord, I can agree with Hudson Taylor: “There is a living God. . . . He means what He says and will do all He has promised.” Give me faith to believe You will fulfill everything You’ve ever spoken to me.

VERSE: [The members of the council] could see that [Peter and John] were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. ACTS 4:13

POINT - 1: Earlier, a crowd in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost had marveled that a bunch of provincial Galileans were speaking in diverse languages from across the empire.

POINT - 2: They came from an unexpected source.

POINT - 3: God speaks through the people we least expect, perhaps even to see if we can look past the flesh and see the Spirit.

POINT - 4: God loves to defy expectations.

TAKEAWAY: Listen for His Spirit to speak profound guidance, not only through gifted spiritual leaders but through uneducated, common mouths, “unaware prophets,” and “unlikely angels.” His voice will be surprising  —not only in what He says but in how He says it.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to recognize You in the least likely places. When You speak through someone who doesn’t seem spiritual or who rubs me the wrong way, help me to look past the surface and into Your Spirit.

VERSE: Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” LUKE 7:40

POINT - 1: Simon the Pharisee observed a sinful woman intruding on his dinner party and tried to make a point about her.

POINT - 2: An illustration. A story that the man could relate to.

POINT - 3: With this illustration, Jesus made the point that Simon had been looking at this woman through the wrong lenses.

POINT - 4: Simon’s attitude toward her wasn’t.

TAKEAWAY: Notice what God is saying through the stories around you. Is He making a point? Shedding different light on an old problem? Reshaping your sympathies and expectations? Very often, He is. His voice can be challenging. But if we accept His challenges, they can change our lives.

PRAYER: Jesus, feel free to challenge me like You challenged Simon. I’m open to change. I invite You to reshape my perspective, even if it stretches me out of my comfort zone.

VERSE: When [Barnabas] arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord. ACTS 11:23

POINT - 1: There was a priest from Cyprus named Joseph, but the disciples called him Barnabas  —which means “son of encouragement.

POINT - 2: In affirming what God was doing, he expressed God’s heart.

POINT - 3: God’s default attitude toward His children is to be encouraging, but encouragement is perhaps the voice of God least heard in the church.

POINT - 4: When God speaks, it will almost always be encouraging.

TAKEAWAY: But we need to understand that in the absence of outright rebellion, God is kindhearted and encouraging toward us. That’s how His voice will sound. We can assume that the oppressive, accusing, critical voice we so often hear is coming from some other place.

PRAYER: Father, let me hear Your encouragement often, and give me opportunities to share it with others. Let me be an expression of the goodness, kindness, and gentleness of Your heart.

POINT - 1: When we listen for God’s voice, our instinct is often to get away and be alone with Him.

POINT - 2: We sometimes forget one crucial detail: God has rigged our relationship with Him to be dependent on other people.

POINT - 3: Our faith is a very individual matter, of course, but it isn’t only that.

POINT - 4: It connects. So He has made our spiritual health and our relationship with Him dependent on connecting with others.

TAKEAWAY: We still need to receive the fruits of those gifts from other people. And sometimes the best place to hear God’s voice is not in privacy, but rather surrounded by people in whom His Spirit lives.

VERSE: I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard . . .REVELATION 1:10, NKJV

POINT - 1: What did John mean by being “in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day”?

POINT - 2: John was in some kind of deep devotional or worshipful frame of mind when he heard the Lord speak.

POINT - 3: Does that mean we always need to be in some meditative state to hear God’s voice? Of course not..

POINT - 4: What begins as a whisper grows into a shout if we are in close fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

TAKEAWAY: Time is never better spent than when we spend it in fellowship with God’s Spirit. That’s where relationships deepen, and deep relationships are where He loves to speak.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit, I offer myself to You—to be “in” You, on any day, and to hear whatever You want to say. Draw me into the closeness of relationship that causes You to want to share Your heart.

POINT - 1: “You worry about the ups and downs in your life."

POINT - 2: "As My Word tells you, there’s a season for everything under heaven. I described what I was envisioning and said, “I think God wants you to know that in this season of your life."

POINT - 3: "I haven’t changed, of course, but you grow when things don’t come to you easily, so I don’t always let them come to you easily.Their world did seem to be spinning, and they could not figure out which way to go."

POINT - 4: "Do not be surprised that your life seems to have ups and downs. It’s supposed to. He would lead them well."

TAKEAWAY: I am drawing you closer, exposing your truest, deepest desires, and letting you seek until you find. Keep seeking, but don’t stress about it. Worry never achieves a thing in My Kingdom. Trust, follow, and come closer. Soon the seasons will change.”

PRAYER: Lord, bring me through the darkness and into the light. Let seasons of refreshing come. Give me the grace in the darkness to cling to what You spoke to me in the light.
