VERSE: Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. PROVERBS 3:5

POINT - 1: When God seems distant, well-meaning Christians take God’s guidance out of the context of a relationship with Him and put it in their own heads.

POINT - 2: Sanctified reasoning may be our only option when He hasn’t spoken, but we aren’t told to default to that.

POINT - 3: We are told to seek His will in everything and believe that He will direct our paths.

POINT - 4: Living by Christian principles rather than by a personal relationship is lazy spirituality.

TAKEAWAY: The listening process is long and intense by design. Why? Because in that uncomfortable, awkward, drawn-out silence between our asking and God’s answering, He pulls us deeper into a relationship with Him. Living by principles requires knowledge, but no fellowship. Living by God’s voice  —that’s much more personal. And that’s God’s desire for those who love Him.

PRAYER: Lord, I’m seeking Your will in everything, just as You instructed me to do. I want to live without regrets, which means living with a clear vision and purpose. I’ll wait as long as I have to in order to hear You. Please reward my persistence with direction and a deeper knowledge of You.

POINT - 1: Some people suggest that many Christians spend too much time trying to discern God’s “perfect will” rather than simply following the heart and wisdom God gave them.

POINT - 2: God does put desires and wisdom into our hearts—but not enough truth to make this the prevailing pattern for our lives.

POINT - 3: God loves to speak to us and guide us.

POINT - 4: Proverbs urges us to forsake our own understanding as we seek God’s direction. Why? Because God’s will often run contrary to our own thought processes.

TAKEAWAY: We have a tremendous capacity for making wrong decisions, and when we look in the rearview mirror, we often wish we had gotten clearer guidance. If we will be patient and persistent in seeking God’s direction, that guidance will come.

PRAYER: Lord, I don’t want to just do whatever seems right. My understanding is limited, but You know what’s best. I want to hear You clearly and specifically.

VERSE: [Philip] had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy. ACTS 21:9

POINT - 1: It’s often argued that the gift of prophecy no longer applies to the church because the Bible is complete.

POINT - 2: In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul urges all of his readers to seek the gift of prophecy, not so they can add to Scripture, but so they can know God’s specific voice in the moment.

POINT - 3: They needed God to speak. And He did  —through normal, prophetic people who could hear Him.

POINT - 4: Prophetic declarations were not unusual in the New Testament era, and there’s no reason they should be today.

TAKEAWAY: The gift of hearing God can certainly be abused, and often has been; but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a legitimate gift. It’s always appropriate to listen for God’s voice.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit, let me hear You. I seek the gift of hearing and telling about what I’ve heard. This is Your promise to us; I accept it wholeheartedly.

VERSE: A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” LUKE 9:35

POINT - 1: Jesus and three of His disciples went up to a mountaintop to pray. As Jesus was praying, His appearance changed...

POINT - 2: Jesus is the clearest, most direct voice of God in Scripture. It isn’t that Moses’ law or the prophetic declarations weren’t also from God, but they weren’t the final revelation.

POINT - 3: “Listen” in Scripture doesn’t mean just to comprehend. It means to embrace or to heed.

POINT - 4: We admire them and honor them, but we often aren’t zealous about following them. That has to change.

POINT - 1: Borrowing a reference from Psalm 95, the writer of Hebrews urges his readers to enter into the place of rest given to us in our salvation.

VERSE: In these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. HEBREWS 1:2

POINT - 1: The writer of Hebrews talks a lot about God’s voice.

POINT - 2: We need an anchor for interpreting God’s voice, a lens through which we choose to see all else. That anchor, that lens, must be Jesus.

POINT - 3: His words come across with radically different implications, depending on which face one sees.

POINT - 4: The exact representation of God is described to us in the pages of the Gospels. God has spoken in that description.

TAKEAWAY: The Son still speaks. He is a living Lord who dwells with us and within us, so we have no need to search for His words as if He were ancient history. But His words are in those books, they are still alive and active, and they still speak loudly. If we want to hear God, we can surely hear Him there.
