The Purpose of Overexcitabilities and Synesthesia. A Novel Theory

In this podcast, we delve into a new theory—my theory—regarding the purpose of overexcitabilities and synesthesia. I provide a big picture, top down perspective on the value and purpose of overexcitabilities and synesthesia.

The current definition of overexcitabilities acknowledges that they involve heightened responsiveness and sensitivity in various domains of human experience, it doesn't provide a comprehensive explanation on why. Nor does it explain why some individuals, particularly neurodivergent people, have these traits while others do not.

The current definition of synesthesia identifies it neurological phenomenon in which the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway involuntarily and automatically leads to experiences in a different sensory or cognitive pathway. In simpler terms, it's a condition in which the senses mix or cross over each other. Again science has defined it without explaining it's purpose and why some individuals, particularly neurodivergent people, have this trait while others do not.

Many of us with overexcitabilities have spent a significant portion of our lives trying to suppress them, which only resulted in exhaustion, burnout, and avoidance of the areas where we were most gifted. This not only hampers the development of individuals who are outliers but also holds back everyone from pursuing their true passions and talents. With Synesthesia we have only recently been able to open up and talk about them without being labeled insane.

If we truly desire to tap into the brilliance of unconventional thinkers, we must let go of the notion that being "extra" or having heightened sensitivities is a negative attribute. By doing so, we can unlock the potential of individuals and foster an environment where everyone is free to pursue what they love and excel in their unique abilities. If this episode resonates with you, I invite you to reach out via email and share your experiences with synesthesia or overexcitabilities at [email protected].
