Pushing through the fear. Feel the fear and do it anyway. I know I go back to it a lot but sports have so many teachable moments. Case in point, Makena recently had a sparing situation where she got hit in the nose really hard by somebody's head. This created the fear that "I'm going to get hit again." She didn't want to do it anymore. This went on for 2-3 weeks. We kept telling her that it may happen again but it's not likely, especially during class. But we also told her that in a real life fight she could get hurt, so it's good she's experiencing it now so she knows how it feels and she'll be ready for it. We kept asking her…if she was going to allow this fear to prevent her from going to class? And if the fear was going to prevent her from getting more stripes, and in the end, advancing in belts? She wanted to go to class but she kept having this fear. Her breakthrough moment happened recently at her last class when she decided to go, regardless of how scared she was. She ended up getting a stripe (in front of all your class) which really helped cement the lesson that what you want is at the otherside of fear and your comfort zone. I'm always proud of her, but I was happy for her when she decided to go to class, even though she was afraid. Push through the fear. Isn't that what we still have to do as adults?
