Ever feel like you’re praying to the wind? Like you have done this same dance for so long that it has become second nature. Maybe your prayers have become stale, drowned out by all the noise of life. Instead of offering back any kind of life, praying is just another task to check off on your spiritual todo list.
But prayer is so much more than this. Prayer is power. Prayer aligns us with the Creator. It is a catalyst in our faith.
This week, we share a few experiences where prayer became a routine, or worse: actually became a hindrance to our faith. Recently Cody realized the same ole prayers he was offering up every night were so focussed on death, fear, and lack that in reality God had no room to work. So we are tackling the topic of superstitious prayers!

Have you ever felt like God is far off? Like you “send up prayers to heaven” only for them to end up right back in your inbox with a mail delivery failure tag. Are you sick and tired of having a one-way conversation?
Honestly, we wish we had the answers to make God start talking back when you gush out your heart. The reality is, we don’t. But what we can offer is possibly a new perspective on prayer.
This week, we are tackling what it means to reconstruct prayer. This is part one in a three-week series where we are going to do our best to discuss prayer in a different light to help reignite prayer in each of our lives. While reconstructing prayer isn’t an easy thing, we believe that when we remove the superstitions and strip it back to its roots, prayer is one of the most life-giving, God aligning practices at our disposal.
So if you feel like you’re at your wit’s end when it comes to talking with God, Maybe after this we can start reconstructing prayer in a healthy, life-giving way.

Why is thinking good? Why should we learn to question our faith/teachings/beliefs?
Many places deem free thought as dangerous. Some churches have shunned the idea of asking questions or rebuked the notion that one can believe something a bit differently. Problems arise when people step out of line but only for the systems that feed on keeping us contained.
Does all this sound a bit like the Matrix? Surely the world/religion/media isn’t that controlling, right? Sadly, it’s true. Everyone is fighting to influence your mind to fit their agenda. Not everyone has bad intentions but when we give up our right to think, we give up our freedom to decide.
This is why from the moment we met this week’s guest, Kyle Butler, we knew we had to hear his voice on the show. Kyle does an amazing job of showing people that thinking is good. Kyle’s voice shines like a light in the dense jungle to help us find our path forward.

January 27, 2020 101 - There Is No "Them"
There is no “them”, there is only us. Deviciveness is not what God intended for creation.
Have you ever heard a sermon about how the big bad world is out to get you? Maybe you had a family member tell you how certain people are your enemy. Perhaps you have been hurt by someone and now certain things trigger you or cause you to push people away.
No matter the cause, divisiveness is one of the worst things that wreak havoc on our minds. We were created for community but division isolates us from each other which in turn isolates us from God.
This week we are talking about how to discover our triggers and overcome them so we can be in unity with each other. We discuss what triggers look and feel like, what causes them to take root in our minds, and how to disarm them. People are never the enemy and while healthy boundaries are good, unhealthy boundaries can hold us back. This episode is challenging but together, we can be brave.

* Allowing yourself to be put in someone else’s shoes

Experiencing the love of Jesus isn’t always what we claim it is in church. It’s not a worship service, a fuzzy feeling, or a strung together set of songs. Experiencing the true love of God goes deeper and is intensely more personal.
This week, we are talking with Jason Elam, host of the Messy Spirituality podcast about his journey through deconstruction after spending years as a pastor, missionary, and evangelist. Jason was “that guy” who other pastors called in to straighten out a church that was asking too many questions. But one day he had an encounter with a God he didn’t recognize through all the layers of religiosity he had been attempting to view God through.
God is bigger than our box, bolder than our attempts to define Him, and way less religious than most of those who claim His name. When we allow our minds to venture out a bit further from our preconceived notions, we begin to experience a deeper love then we could ever have witnessed from the shoreline.

January 06, 2020 098 - Life Lessons Learned from Literal Deconstruction
What happens when the filter on your refrigerator explodes and no one is home for over a week to catch it? You end up with rotten hardwood floors, moldy tapestries, and mushy drywall. Then you get to spend the evening you get home attempting to clean it all up. But the honest truth is sometimes things are torn up beyond repair and all you can do is start deconstructing down till you find what’s good so you can start fresh.
This week, we are talking about life lessons learned from a literal deconstruction. There are so many lessons to be learned when life happens. We hope to capture and share here the spiritual inclinations we picked up along the way as we pump out a lot of elbow grease and even more patience.

How can you make God an idol? What does it mean to worship the idea of God more than God His/Herself? Whos image of God do you look to when you worship?
Have you ever taken any time to look at a portrait of someone else? Take the Mona-Lisa as an example. While it’s true that without that painting none of us would even know who this was, it still doesn’t really tell us much about her. As a matter of fact, we have no idea of what makes her, her at all!
How often do we do this very thing with God? We spend our time looking at other people’s portrayals of God and craft for ourselves an idol out of their revelation. But that leaves us complacent without learning who God is to us uniquely. There is no relationship with a painting, no depth to who was originally depicted beyond the scene portrayed.
We can spend our time looking to other people, church, systems, and even our own works but it is all in vain if we do not take the tie to get to know who God is to us. It’s time to quit committing idolatry with an idea of God.

* The dangers of idolizing the church

* Making an idol out of someone else’s understanding of God
