  • Why Treasure Left Arbitrum To Build Their New Chain on ZK Sync

While in Singapore this week, Andy found time to interview Karel Vuong about the "public breakup" of TreasureDAO with Arbitrum.

What grants did ZK Sync offer? Is Treasure grants hopping? Why does Treasure want their own chain? What does this mean for the community?

We left no stone unturned and gave Karel a platform to clear the air.

  • Why Liquid Funds Have An Edge over VCs

Today's episode with Zaheer from Split Capital, we dive into the nuanced strategies of running a liquid fund in this ever-evolving crypto market.

With the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs and institutional investors gaining more influence, the market's dynamics have become more complex and less predictable. Zaheer walks us through how Split Capital adapts to shifts in market conditions and why understanding the current landscape is crucial for anyone serious about crypto investing. We explore his investment style, which emphasizes flexibility and a regime-agnostic approach, and what Zaheer’s take on credit expansion, which he cites as a critical factor limiting crypto asset growth. We also discuss DeFi’s trajectory from 2020’s lofty ambitions to a more mature, regulatory-focused application, and why creating robust monetary systems remains the most compelling use case in crypto.

Zaheer doesn't sugarcoat the reality for retail traders in this space, especially as the market becomes more professional and dominated by institutions. For those interested in the bigger picture, he outlines why Ethereum's so-called "identity crisis" isn’t as catastrophic as some might think and how human coordination could ultimately triumph over infighting and dogma.

This conversation is packed with insights into the current market cycle, the role of credit, and the importance of building a strategy based on conviction rather than hype. Enjoy!

  • ZKVMs vs. ZK Circuits: A Spicy Debate

Today, we get to moderate a debate that’s been brewing in the ZK-space: ZKVMs or custom ZK circuits?

ZKVMs have been pivotal in getting projects up and running quickly. They lower technical barriers by making zero-knowledge proofs accessible to more developers. But as applications mature, there’s a growing question: do you stick with the flexibility of ZKVMs, or do you shift toward building custom ZK circuits for that extra boost in efficiency and performance?

In this episode, we’ll unpack what makes each approach unique. We’ll explore the pros and cons of using a generalizable ZKVM, the impact of custom circuit development, and how these choices affect everything from developer experience to security audits. The goal of this debate is understanding the trade-offs and how ZK fits into your project’s long-term vision.

Whether you’re building a new DeFi protocol, optimizing your existing stack, or just curious about where ZK tech is headed, this discussion offers plenty of ideas about implementing ZK and how to do it.

Now, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of ZK.

  • The Future of Bitcoin with Jeff Garzik

After working with Satoshi in the early years, and almost 15 years of crypto experience, legend Jeff Garzik shares his story in this exclusive interview. Recently, we did an educational deep dive into several teams working on extending Bitcoin with innovative mechanism designs and Bitcoin L2s on Bitcoin and Beyond. This conversation is a phenomenal next episode in that series.

Today, Hemi is attempting to unify Bitcoin and Ethereum. A Bitcoin L2 with customizations to more deeply integrate the top two blockchain ecosystems; Hemi is based on two core innovations: the hVM incorporates new byte codes into the EVM that talk directly to Bitcoin, and Proof of Proof (PoP) consensus which allows Hemi to achieve "superfinality" on Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin and Ethereum communities have long been at odds debating the true purpose of cryptocurrency, and best design principles to bring about mass adoption. Jeff calls Bitcoin the "root of the crypto tree" and Ethereum "the grand central station of crypto". With Hemi technology, its possible to unite the two blockchains and maybe the two communities once and for all.

  • The Based Rollup Stack with Spire Labs

Today, we're unraveling the concept of "based rollups" with The Based Stack from Spire Labs.

Spire's framework for building "based appchains" is designed to utilize Ethereum's base layer while offering a whole new level of flexibility and control.

At the heart of Spire's offering is the idea of customizable composability. They've developed a way for app developers to decide exactly how their chains interact with Ethereum’s state, which could be a gamechanger for optimizing onchain applications. Spire has developed a modular framework to customize sequencing, deeply optimizing the appchain sequencer.

We'll break down Spire’s approach to Ethereum alignment but also how based rollups open up new possibilities for cutting costs and improving user experience. Plus, Spire's focus on real-time state access brings back smooth, interconnected feel of the DeFi Summer era on Ethereum.

We cover everything from the nuances of Ethereum's sequencer election mechanism to the role of pre-confirmations in shaping user interactions.

Let's explore what makes Spire stand out in the current rollup landscape and why it might just be the approach developers have been waiting for.

  • The Celestia Roadmap with Nick White

1GB blocks are coming. Since November last year, 20 rollups have launched according to Celenium, the Celestia block explorer and those rollups have since published over 75GB of data.

Following the Lemongrass upgrade, Celestia will aim to execute the roadmap across three different core tracks with the broader vision of enabling end-user verifiability to the fullest extent possible.

    1. Abundant Blockspace: Targeting 1GB blocks to scale for a wide range of rollups.

    2. Verifiable Blockspace: Ensures blockspace can be verified by any user, on any device.

    3. Frictionless Blockspace: Reduces friction for rollup developers and users.

Celestia being inherently modular means the chain isn’t limited by execution layer overhead or state bloat. This flexibility allows for high-throughput apps, speeding up existing crypto applications and enabling new possibilities, like fully onchain apps.

In today's special podcast, we’re diving into Celestia’s roadmap and what it means for the future of the modular ecosystem with Nick White.

Nick, the COO of Celestia, walks us through the next phase of their roadmap. One of the most significant shifts is the move from 2MB to 1GB blocks, entering the "fiber-optic" era of DA, where abundant block space could transform onchain possibilities.

...However, do we really need all this blockspace? Where are the novel apps? Will Celestia transition to validity proof sampling? How will Celestia make it easy for anyone to run a light node?

These questions and many more answered in today's pod as we break down the key takeaways from Nick’s insights and what they mean for the modular ecosystem.

  • Can IBC Become The Interoperability Standard For L2s? With Polymer

For our final chain abstraction focused podcast in NYC, we are talking about IBC.

IBC is well known as the interoperability standard for the Cosmos ecosystem. Its by far the most lindy interoperability protocol, which explains Bo's "infatuation" with IBC as a whole.

Polymer has been working on interoperability since 2021, and their journey has evolved to bring them into the Ethereum rollup landscape.

Initially, Polymer explored Z solutions for verifying cross-chain transactions, but by early 2022, they narrowed focus towards L2 to L2 markets. This shift away from ZK wasn’t about abandoning the technology entirely—it was about focusing on what would solve real, immediate problems for app developers and protocols.

We had a really good chat with Bo about the vision, the path thus far, and where they are headed.

One of the key pain points Polymer is addressing is the long latency between L2s, particularly when waiting for Ethereum’s finality, which can take 12–16 minutes. This lag can be costly, both in time and in fees, as solvers charge users to take on the settlement risk.

With their testnet live since March 2024 and mainnet just around the corner, Polymer is positioned to bring IBC to Ethereum and the modular ecosystem sooner than later. Today’s episode will dive deep into how Polymer’s approach to cross-chain communication is evolving and what it means for the future of app-specific rollups in the crypto ecosystem.

    Enjoy.

  • Why Solving Is The Biggest Onchain Opportunity In Crypto with Catalyst

This was probably the most alpha packed episode of the entire NYC content series.

Jim literally spilled a massive, yet completely unknown opportunity in the world of onchain finance right now.

Throughout this episode, we’re unpacking Catalyst’s take on how solvers have evolved, the critical role they play in onchain interoperability, and what it all means for builders, traders, and enthusiasts alike.

Jim kicked things off by sharing how he built his personal brand around adding real value to the conversation—whether through early analysis of DAOs, NFTs, or providing key insights into emerging projects. His approach to being authentic and data-driven is something that resonates well in a space where everyone is constantly looking for that next edge.

Then, we got into the nitty gritty of the opportunity at hand: Solving.

The onchain solving space is still dominated by a few big players, and Catalyst sees decentralizing the solver network as a crucial step forward. Lowering the barriers to entry and creating more opportunities for new solvers to jump in is where the market could see its next big wave of innovation.

For builders, the message is clear: there’s still plenty of room to get involved. Solvers are still early-stage, and with a bit of capital and a solid strategy, even small teams can find their niche. Catalyst also pointed out that much like the evolution of MEV searchers, solvers are likely to see a handful of dominant players, but there will also be space for specialists focusing on niche areas.

Ding ding ding. This is the key part, and you must rewatch this segment!

By the end of the conversation, one thing was obvious—solvers are quickly becoming a core component of the chain abstraction stack, and for anyone building in this space, paying attention to how these protocols and their solvers evolve could be key to unlocking new opportunities.

We really enjoyed this, hope you do too!
