When you start involving employees in your safety program they become more engaged, energized and excited about safety. The idea is not just to involve them in a mandatory way, but to make them WANT to be involved. Safety is not a necessary evil. Your employees can and should be excited about safety.

So many times when an accident happens we look at the direct cost that comes in the form of medical bills or repair estimates. The actual cost of medical services needed to take care of an injury might not be much, but when you take the time to look at the big picture, you recognize that the cost is much higher. Why? Because there are indirect costs involved. Today, I’m challenging you to get in the habit of quantifying those costs.

JHA’s are living documents and should be in active use in your facility. They break a job task down into steps and then for every step associate the hazards for those steps and how to mitigate them. The common use for a JHA is for training and possibly for a pre-operation review. But there is so much more you can do with a JHA.

80% of the safety manager’s job is getting workers to understand and follow safety rules.  What if you looked at this as building habits instead?  There is some interesting research on learning that can be applied to safety.  In this show, we talk about habit formation, conditioned learning, and operant learning.  These techniques are the basis of behavior-based safety.
