One of my clients decided she wanted to turn her profession into becoming a coach in her profession.

Currently she is in the soft launch of her coaching business and she’s now helping  a few  people run their business with profits. 

But she stumbled upon so many limiting beliefs, that it took her 7 years to do this.

What was keeping her from coaching?

• the belief that being a coach = automatically being a fraud
• the idea that others would think she is taking the easy road
• everyone has an opinion about coaches and she doesn’t want to hear that

There’s actually so much hatred about the coaching industry and while I believe there’s bad coaches out there, I believe there’s also bad CEO’s, managers, chefs, bakers, freelance

Criticisms can really ruin your day and if you’re very much into self-criticism, you will get the confirmation that you’re doing it all wrong. 

Sometimes that feeling can really stay and for me to say that you are not your thoughts is easy to say, but it is really true. Sometimes I can just feel bad and I’m thinking: why am I feeling bad? And then it’s because of that. 

So one of the first things you should determine when you receive criticism is to determine who is saying this.

You did not become an artist to make money in the first place. And even if you're not an artist, maybe there's some juicy tips for you to diversify your income streams.

So, art & money, has literally been an eternal struggle (think of Rembrandt, Van Gogh) - but you do need money to survive and be able to create more art for people who enjoy your output.

Try to think of money as a convenient tool that enables you to create the art you want and work with clients you really love.

The traditional ways of making money in the arts have faded, for instance as a recording artist, labels are still existing, but how much money do you actually make? The time of people buying your albums and that being enough to be profitable is over (of course there are exceptions).

So how do you actually make sure you'll survive?

You can create merchandise, start up a membership or write a paid column for a magazine or a newspaper (I'm revealing 10 more ways to diversify your income in this week's podcast episode).

And maybe now you're thinking: Sarah, I don't want to do all that, I don't want people thinking I am a sell-out...

And I totally get that, so I created a 4-step process for you on how to determine how to find that extra income stream, because counting on a sudden 'bestseller' could be a strategy, but there's still so many other things you can do.

The 4-steps are:

1. Purpose
2. Pleasure
3. Messaging
4. Compound

Throughout the years I’ve actively added people that I know to my network, right up until the point I hit about 2300 followers and connections.

There's 2 different types of freelancers/ small business owners*:
​
1. The ones who trust clients will come to them based on reviews from others.
​
2. The ones who put in the work to build a filled pipeline with clients who can't wait to work with them - depending on their time and money.
​
*I'm making it black and white to make my point, I know there's more nuance ;-).
​
Now that I've coached quite some entrepreneurs, I believe that number 2 creates much more opportunity to run the business of their dreams as opposed to number 1.
​
Do you want this too? Here's the first steps you can take:
​
1. Work on your personal brand to be the first to pop up in someone's head;
​
2. Be visible online. Social media = free, use it;
​
3. Share valuable insights daily that help your ideal clients (what are their pains & desires);
​
4. Make it easy for your potential client to reach you (have multiple doors);
​
5. Create content that makes you happy as well;

6. Consider starting a podcast or a blog;
​
​--> and especially if you want to start creating a podcast, I recorded this episode this week to help get you started and decide if you want this for your business too, to attract your ideal client.

If you're not born into an entrepreneurial family, if you don't have many friends who own a business and if you're believing everything they tell you at school, then starting & running a business can be quite hard.

Believe me I know ;-).

So especially for those who are feeling a bit of a mismatch between what their business could be and what it is now, I created this podcast episode; a collection of all the things I wish I knew a lot sooner, it would have made my life and business a lot easier.

I strongly believe running your business should be easy and I strongly disagree with the hustle culture that many business coaches encourage you to work on.

The result does count, but the process too and if something doesn't work for you, you can always stop what you're doing.
