Does a poor performance really rock your world and you tend to lose confidence and wonder what's going on?

Today I'm answering a questions from someone who had left a question on our blog at peaksports.com/sports-psychology-blog.

Here's what Rick had to say:

"I'm in need of some help... I just had one of the worst football games of my entire football career and it is breaking me down slowly. I need to know how to get over this and move on."

COHN: Rick, good question. It is really really important for athletes to respond to losses, to respond to poor performances in the right way. A lot of times athletes with fragile confidence will tend to implode after a poor performance.

COHN: What is a poor performance? You can ask yourself that question... Often it is when you perform below your standards or below your expectations, feeling like you made too many mistakes or you didn't score enough points or you shot too high of a number in the golf round.

COHN: So, poor performances are transient, in other words, they are temporary, unless you get on the doubt bandwagon and start to doubt your skills, you start to change thngs up radically sometimes it'll work but most times, when you start changing things up radically, then you go downhill.

I'm continuing my series on: What is mental coaching? How does mental coaching work? And, what do you do as a mental coach?

Another question that I receive from listeners is:

"What are the things that you do as a mental coach? What are the things that you work on when you're working with athletes?"

COHN: It is a good question and one I receive often from people that will call in requesting more information about the mental coaching or write in via our website at peaksports.com and they want more information about: What do you do in your sessions? How do you help athletes?

COHN: It may not be what you think because I am not a therapist, i am not a psychotherapist, I am not a psychologist... I'm a coach and simply a mental coach.

COHN: So, what that means is I work on the mental preparation piece and helping athletes take their practice game to competition successfully.

COHN:where my work really comes in is when athletes are under performing in competition. They are having problems taking their practice game to the actual game and they struggle with fear of failure, with doubt, lack of confidence, lack of trust in their skills getting highly upset or frustrated...

COHN: So, what is is that I do? What are the mental skills that I actually teach athletes?

I get a lot of questions about mental coaching and what a mental coach does and how the process works...

Today, I'm going to answer a questions from one of our listeners about:

"How does mental coaching or mental training work?"

COHN: Once we get connected with an athlete that is interested in metal coaching, we will ask a few questions and see if it is a good fit. Sometimes it is just not a good fir and for whatever reason we feel like the athlete isn't read for mental coaching or doesn't need mental coaching.

COHN: So we just start with a conversation with an athlete or parent about what we do as a mental coach and ask them a few question about their mental game.

COHN:Once were on go and an athlete commits to doing the mental training with us, then we shoot off two different assessments for the athlete. One is called an AMAP Assessment, or Athlete's Mental Aptitude Profile, and the second is the AMAT Test, which we use as a pre-coaching gauge to find out where the athlete is with their mental game.
