  • What happens if Putin doesn’t play ball?

After the US declared the 'ball is in Russia’s court' over the 30-day ceasefire plan agreed with Ukraine, the Kremlin claims it needs more information before responding. Professor Scott Lucas from University College Dublin argues that Vladimir Putin is likely to reject the deal while playing to Donald Trump’s ego, leaving US officials to manage the challenges of unpredictable diplomacy.

  • Ukraine’s troops surrounded as peace talks begin

US-Ukraine peace talks will resume on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia, the first since the Oval Office row 10 days ago. But after a bruising week since, during which the US ended its military aid for and intelligence sharing with Ukraine and Russia has taken advantage on the battlefield, their negotiating position looks weaker than ever. It comes on the day reports say Ukraine's troops are completely surrounded in Kursk. The Times' World Affairs Editor, Catherine Philp, analyses just how damaged they've been going in to the meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials.

  • China makes its move

While the world watches Donald Trump chasing peace in Ukraine, China has used its biggest political event of the year to appeal to US allies.
