  • 028: Kill Bad Habits Dead with these Proven Tricks
Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into but hard to get out of

They say old habits die hard.

    They're right.

    They do.

But does that mean to say you're gonna let bad habits get the better of you?

    You're kidding! A strong-minded mama like you?

    No way.
In fact, knowing that replacing bad old habits with shiny fresh new ones will take time and effort, is the essential first mindset tool you need to kill those destructive old habits dead.
In this weeks episode of The Friday Café, Michelle Dawson and I talk about our shared addiction to Jaffa Cakes, and how to kill those naughty bad habits dead.

  • 009: Spice up Your Marriage to the Way it Used to Be | Shawn Fink

Today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday is all about putting the sparkle back into your marriage.

When you first met your partner, life was so much fun. So carefree. So spontaneous. You could jump in the car and catch a movie at a moment's notice. You could go out for dinner on a whim. You could stay up late, drink too much wine and not have to worry about getting up early in the morning.

You love your husband, but since your kids arrived and life got busy, your marriage isn't as much fun as it used to be.

That's why I invited SuperMum Shawn Fink onto my show. Shawn is mum to 10 year old twin girls, a family wellness coach for mothers around the world, the author of 'The Playful Family' and 'The Abundant Mama's guide to Savoring Slow' and the founder of The Abundant Mother Project which inspires mothers to find their happy place so they can raise happy, thriving children in a peaceful home environment.

From her own personal experinece, Shawn realises how hard it is to maintain a marriage while raising kids and keeping a home running day after day. You can feel isolated and alone because between all the to-dos and deadlines and the children's needs and phases there really isn't much time left at the end of each day for anything, let alone your relationship.

But Shawn teaches us that with a change in our mindset, a shift in our interpersonal habits and by looking at our communication we can gain a deeper understanding of each other and have a marriage that thrives. A happy marriage filled with joy, fun, connection and teamwork.

  • 023: Secrets to Developing a Strong Mind and Finding Balance | Sara Robinson
The strong-minded rise to the challenge of their goals and dreams

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we’ll be discussing how to create the strength of mind of an athlete to use in your life as a mum which will help to create balance and harmony in your busy world.
My guest today is SuperMum, Sara Robinson.
Sara has two small boys aged 4 and 1, has a Masters Degree in Sports Psychology and is a Mental Skills Coach. After learning first hand how hard it is to juggle everything that comes with the job title of Mum, Sara worked out the solution and went on to launch ‘Get Mom Balanced’ an online community of mums.
In her work, Sara brings together her professional skills and knowledge helping athletes, plus her experience as a mum, to help other busy mums create balance and develop the mental skills needed to survive and thrive in motherhood.
Today Sara will teach us why Mental Skills Training is so beneficial, and gives us some practical tools that we can use to strengthen our minds as mums. And I don’t know about you, but some days I need some of that in extra large doses.
Sara will help us understand why it’s important to look under our own bonnet, to find where our own passions and interests lie. We can then use that as a springboard to find out what makes us tick and then harness that to create a life that we love. A life that’s fulfilling to us as a woman, instead of simply fulfilling the needs of everyone else all the time.
I’m excited that Sara is joining us today because she’s passionate about helping mums to seek balance and give them support for the challenges of mom life. And I’m confident that she’ll help you too.

In this episode, you'll find out:

What Mental Skills Training is, and how we can take the mental strength skills that athletes use and apply them to our life as busy mums
How to get ourselves, and our children, to become mentally strong
Why finding balance is so important, but why it's such a struggle to make balance part of our lives
How to say no without feeling terrible
The benefits and challenges of working from home
How you can take the skills that you have - your education, your professional experience and your passions and interests - and turn them into something that allows for balance

     Hope you enjoy todays show!

Sara has kindly offered a free give-away with todays show. Send me an email with the words "Sara's give-away" in the subject line, and I'll send you the link to the Calmer Mama Checklist which helps mums understand the steps for how to calm down.

    If not now, when?

Someday. Later. Not yet. One day. Soon.

    There's always tomorrow.

    But why not NOW?

It might be boring. You might not feel like it. You may not know how.

Overcome it, then take that critical first step.

It doesn't have to be perfect. Don't let yourself feel overwhelmed. And remember, you only fail if you don't try.

Attack it, SuperMum. Then bask in the reward of achievement.

In this week's episode of The Friday Café, Michelle Dawson and I talk about procrastination.

  • 021: Self Care is Vital and Here’s the Proof | Lauren Wills
Who we are, as people, is a far more accurate and profound predictor of who our kids will be than what we know about parenting
    [Brené Brown]

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we’ll be discussing a research study that is currently being conducted into the well-being of mothers of pre-school aged children.
My guest today is SuperMum, Lauren Wills.
Lauren has an 8 year old daughter, and a son who is 5, and is a Life Coach for Mums. She’s passionate about helping women reclaim their inner spark and live a life they love.
Lauren has a Master of Social Work from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and is currently a PhD candidate studying the well-being of pre-school mothers.
In her work, Lauren has discovered that there’s a tremendous amount of research into the institution of motherhood, but sadly, we often don’t get to hear about it.
But she’s determined to change that, because Lauren believes that when more information is readily available to us mothers, we’ll stop feeling like our problems are exclusively ours, or that we have to work out a solution and deal with those challenges by ourselves.
Lauren's research has shown that a mother's well-being has a more positive an impact on her child than her education, her employment, the number of hours her child spends in day care or any other factors. Read that again. It's really significant.
I’m excited that Lauren is joining us today to share her knowledge and findings, and in doing so, gives us the kick-start we need to start prioritising our own well-being.

In this episode, you'll find out:

How Lauren came to research the well-being of pre-school mums, and why her study is so important
How traditional feminist views clash with the way women want to be as a mother, and how those views are being changed
How and why your identity changes when you became a mother
What research has taught us about what makes mums happy
The practical plans Lauren has to use the findings from her study to help women like us in the trenches of motherhood
How Lauren's PhD study and professional work has impacted her personal life as a mum

  • 007: The Fast Way to Nourish from Within for Busy Mums | Mandie Spooner

Today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday is all about managing to eat nutritious food in spite of being rushed off your feet.

Now, I'll be honest with you, but whenever I hear anything about healthy eating, my eyes start to glaze over. I'm not sure why, because I'm a complete foodie. I love to cook, I love healthy natural ingredients, heck, I even like grocery shopping.

But that whole healthy eating monologue I find, well…. kinda dull.

That was, until I met Mandie Spooner. Mandie is a Nutritional Therapist, living in the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Mandie brings a special sparkle to eating great food, and she doesn't even mention quinoa, or chickpeas.

You'll love this show because Mandie teaches us about how we can incorporate more broccoli into our busy life in a fun and informative way.

And the best bit? Mandie even gives you permission to eat CAKE!

  • 005: Overcoming the Challenges of the Early Years | Libby Lennon

Today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday is all about overcoming the challenges of the early years. We've all been there, your baby won't stop crying, smelly nappies need changing, toddlers having meltdowns in the middle of the supermarket, negotiating red shoes versus blue shoes with your three year old and all topped off with a copious sprinkling of sleepless nights.

It's a really busy time, and as mums we can often end up feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. But don't despair because my guest today will help you see through the fog.

SuperMum, Libby Lennon and her husband have three busy boys aged 6, 3 and 2, and for a while there, they had three children under four. Libby's eldest son started school this year, which is the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. It adds a new dynamic with getting out of the house on time in the morning and she still has two pre-schoolers and a part time job to contend with.

Despite all the balls that Libby keeps in the air, and the huge volume of work that she faces every single day, she does it with a spring in her step and a positive attitude. Libby has such a bright and energetic soul, and I know you'll love her.

Even if you've come out of the chaos of the pre-school years, Libby is well worth listening to, because you can nod in agreement and say, 'I remember it well'.

Libby's really frank and honest about the challenges that the early years throw at you, but she gives us her own real life examples plus the actionable steps that she took. Amongst the chaos, she's managed her own needs in the scraps of spare time that she's able to scrape together.

By being personally fulfilled and happy, Libby's better able to serve her family. Because of this, she's successfully been able to stay positive, manage her mindset, and in years to come she'll be able to look back at these intense early years with fondness because she's genuinely enjoying the journey.

Willpower is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets

Do you wake up in the morning with good intentions?

Today's the day that I'm going to get my paperwork in order.
Today's the day that I'm going to cut out chocolate.
But come the evening, you're completely shattered, the kids are driving you crazy, and low and behold, none of it has been done, despite your good intentions.
And you feel like you've failed yourself again.
The good news is, the only thing that stands between you and your goals is willpower.
It's not that some people have it and some people don't.
    No.

We all have willpower. And it's a skill you can develop.
