What are oral ties? These are bands of tissue that form under the tongue, inside the upper and lower lip, and inside the cheeks. It's normal to have them. But some ties are restrictive and inhibit proper tongue/lip function. They can range from thick to thin, be easy to spot when the tongue is lifted or they may be hidden. (Posterior tongue ties are under the tongue at the base.) Ties can form between the upper teeth-creating a space. Or they may restrict the tongue from sticking out or reaching up to the palate. A professional will know if ties are a problem.
