Jay is a fellow member of the Trinity University alumni community and during his time on the Trinity men's basketball team they competed in the NCAA tournament four straight seasons. 

He highlights why building relationships matter and the power of transparency and collaboration. Jay knows that great leaders serve their team members by advocating for resources, which often takes the form of leading up and leading laterally. He also describes how being aware that the leader isn't always the expert actually enables others to act and allows the team to be more successful.

During the segment, I provide an overview of Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model, discuss details about the connection between a leader's style and the follower's developmental level, and why it's essential that leaders engage in conversations with their team members. 

In the Rapid Fire Interview segment, I discuss leadership philosophy and principles with Shelly Setzer, the co-founder of Realize, an organizational consulting and team development company that seeks to create enduring organizations where people flourish. Shelly is a fellow member of the Trinity University alumni community and was an important part of the Trinity women's soccer team that helped launch the program into the next stratosphere. 

She highlights the value of listening to your inner voice, that great leaders create cultures where employees can feel seen and heard, and why The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a valuable tool for organizations, big or small. Shelly says that everyone in the organization, regardless of title, can 1) show up with curiosity and courage, 2) be yourself, and 3) work to build trust. It was such a joy to catch up with an old friend who is doing her part to make the world a better place!

In this bonus episode of The Take Home, I have the good fortune to speak with Dr. Danny J. Anderson (@TU_President19), Trinity University's19th President. She also discusses why experience, internships, and volunteerism matters for those wanting to work in sports. Christina came to the sport later in life and moved into her current role after many years as a project manager for a global company. The experience of shifting from the for-profit world to a world governing body in the sports world gave her a unique perspective and allowed her to develop her leadership philosophy. In our conversation she highlights the differences between positional and personal power, why 360 degree evaluations are so important, and that good leaders are empathetic role models who live the organizational values.

In episode 2, of Season 2, I provide a brief lecture on Kouzes and Posner's "The Leadership Challenge." During the lecture portion, I detail the fundamentals of leadership, describe the characteristics of admired leaders, and highlight the Five Practices (or behaviors) of Exemplary Leaders. 

In the Rapid Fire Interview segment, I discuss leadership philosophy and Transformational Leadership with Jamie Thompson, a Trinity alumna, former college golf captain, and the current Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Involvement at Trinity University. 

Jamie's focuses on high expectations, ensuring team members have the freedoms to experiment and take risks, and building trust. She cares deeply about the Five Leadership Practices and is a great example of what it means for a titled leader to Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, Encourage the Heart.

She describes that great leaders start with a clear understanding of organizational values and that organizations with strong cultures review and reward results based on meeting expectations - specifically achieving goals that are directly tied to mission, vision, and values.
