What a week at LACC! Although  the reviews may have been a bit less positive than we may have expected, it was still an awesome week to be a golf fan and take in the 3rd major of the year.

We split time this week between being at the event vs watching on TV so we entered into a chat today about what the experience was like on the ground vs just watching from home. We also tackle some of the common complaints we were hearing this week and break down our thoughts on whether the issues people took with LACC were valid or not.

Regardless of your take on LACC and this past week's US Open, it's pretty cool that they were willing to stage an open and allow people to get a glimpse at this golden age gem.

This is an episode that has been a long time coming, and this felt like the perfect time to call in Coach Ray to talk about a big week ahead for the Stanford Cardinal at LACC. With 4 players in the field, it is already a historic week for the Stanford Men's Golf program and it will be awesome to see where things shake out over the course of the week.

While Coach Ray has 4 players in this week's US Open, his depth with this event and golf course go much further than that. As a competitor in the 2005 US Open, Coach Ray has a wealth of stories about The Cat, what it's like to be a competitor in a US Open, what he still takes with him from that week as a coach, and more. Furthermore, Coach Ray and i got into a conversation about what has happened in recent times in the golf world and what this could all mean for college golf and young talent in general.

We're here! This is a week we've been fired up about for a long, long time and we couldn't be more excited that it's here. A major championship, on an incredible golf course, with a golf world that is in a super interesting spot, what a time to be having an event like this.

To kick the week off, we are going to talk about who we each think is going to finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at this event, and of course why. It's a course that we don't know a ton about relative to many US Open course which makes it a bit harder to project, so naturally, we're leaning on the guns. What a treat to have Mike McCoy here to talk about his preparations for this summer's Walker Cup as well as his own background in the game. A few highlights:

What a list of achievements and captaining the US side at St. Andrews later this summer surely will be moved close to the top of that list.

Had to do it! Like every golf podcast under the sun, we are here to hop on and chat about the LIV-PGA merger and what we think about how things have gone down so far. NCAA Golf was a hot piece of the golf landscape over the last few weeks and we consumed A LOT of it. As the years have gone on, more and more people seem to be really intrigued by what is going on in the college golf space; however, the communication through the broadcast of the format, who the players are, and the overall context of the championship just flat out needs to be better.

While some of the the people who have been involved in putting the broadcast on have been great additions to the championship, there are many people who are not involved directly that could add so much more value to the championship which is what today's conversation will center around. While the product has been strong and gained more traction overt the years, we believe it could be a lot better and there is a lot of further growth to be seen with the NCAA championships.

These are some of the more subtle features in a golf course that often may or may not be discussed at as much length as other aspects when we value a golf course for its architectural merits. That said, these are some of the features of courses that take good courses and make them great, and make the elite ones as described.

Today we tease out why these 3 categories can add so much to a golf course and the true value that is created by having great greens, features, and a top bar routing. These are the things the best architects and properties get just right and the often times harder to explain details of what makes our favorite places so good.
