A great conversation today with Geoff discussing his new book, Golf Architecture for Normal People!
This book really can have appeal to anyone who plays the game. Whether you have a passing interest in course architecture and are looking to learn a simple framework on how to evaluate the places you play golf or are deep in its intricacies, there is something to be gained from this book. Its a quick and easy read, and I believe you all will enjoy it.
On top of the conversation about the book specifically, Geoff and I discuss our personal passions for and musings on golf courses and the game in general. We discuss the upcoming open at LACC as Geoff knows that golf course as well as anyone having been involved in the work done on the course restoration. Of course, we started with the DERT, and a whole lot more.
Thanks for the listen, and let us know what you think!
Cheers,

What an enigmatic character this man is. Its people like Phil who make sports interesting and after his incredible run at the Masters we figured we would hop on and have a more comprehensive discussion about what happened at Augusta and what we think we can expect from him for the rest of the year.
We often apply rules in sports. Players can't do something after some age. No way you can return to form from... But what is often forgotten is that the truly great athletes are the ones who set and reset those boundaries, and I think that is exactly what we are seeing with Phil. He's a crazy man who does crazy things, and I believe there are a few more tricks up his sleeve. Strap in to found out more!

We view golf course ratings and rankings a bit differently. To us, its all about how good is a course given the confines of how good it could be and how enjoyable it is to play each time you go.
Not every course was given the piece of land nor investment to be a Pine Valley or Augusta National, and thats perfectly fine, because we don't like to talk about courses compared to all other courses, but rather their specific competitive set, and most importantly, themselves. The only true comparison that matters is how good a golf course is relative to what it could be.
In that format, we will be doing these episodes to identify great golf courses in different categories of courses rather than simply, best in state, country, or the world.
Let us know how you enjoy this episode and these categories and let us know which other ones you want to hear soon!

One of the absolute coolest courses out there and a fantastic college golf event to catch this week on golf channel, The Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo is underway this week in Santa Cruz and we are here to prime you.
Pasa is another Alister Mackenzie gem and is always a cool one to watch coming straight off The Masters as you will see many parallels between it and Augusta National.
In today's episode, we talk at length about Mackenzie's design philosophy, how that situates itself in the realm of competitive golf, some particular holes to watch out for this week and those holes mirror ones at Augusta, and much more.
We are officially ripping into the NCAA post season so be on the lookout for more awesome NCAA golf and coverage from us on it very soon.

We each own, follow, or believe in an assortment of brands that represent the way we see the game. Maybe it's the product itself, or the lifestyle it represents- but in the age of social media, the story can be just as powerful.
Mike Norcia first got his hands on Maine sail fabric less than 3 years ago. He had the foresight to see an opportunity with head covers, accessories, and now half-set bags. With crucial help from his wife, who runs partnering brand "Sternlines", Forewind Golf Products are very close to having a seat at the table with golf's favorite handmade brands.

It lived up to the hype.
The Tie Guys were on site for this past saturday's Augusta National Women's Amateur and my goodness was it a treat. All the charm and classic expectations of ANGC, with just a fraction of the crowds and a different set of players. What a treat to get to watch the best female amateurs in the world take on Augusta just before the pros get to. If you watched the event and are interested in what its like to be there. Give this a whirl!
Of course, we talk a bit of masters on the backend, but by in large, this one is for the ladies.
Happy Masters Week!

Although not a part of the field this year due to shoulder surgery, Rachel has competed in 2 previous ANWAs, finishing one shot out of a playoff in 2021, so she certainly has plenty of knowledge of the golf course and tournament as a whole.
Today, we talk a bit about Rachel's history at the tournament before parlaying that into some more specific questions about the golf course and what its like to play it both from a competitive and pure enjoyment standpoint. Rachel has a very refreshing outlook on how to play the game and the importance of just having fun while competing, especially at a place like Augusta.
Be sure to tune into the final round tomorrow at Augusta! Always one of the best viewing experiences of the year!

Rankings, what a concept. Everyone has their opinions of how to do it, who does it best, whether they actually matter at all, etc etc.
We have been working on doing our own rankings for a long time as we have played so many courses and had lengthy conversations about every single one. That said, it is never easy to figure out to actually rank one course vs the next, so today we explain to you all a multi year process of us figuring out how to discuss rankings and make for a better conversation about them.
Let us know how you feel about our ideas here and don't hesitate to reach out with specific thoughts or questions about what we have to say!

Ian Critser joins us today from Beaverton, Oregon- a place he's called home for the last three years working for Mackenzie Golf Bags.
I always enjoy hearing stories from others who are young in their careers and have attached themselves to interesting businesses. Mackenzie, in that regard, is fascinating.
Mackenzie was a longstanding brand with a humble story. Nic Mulfler's (Owner) dad acquired the business when he was just out of college. They leveraged the brand loyalty that existed despite old practices and neglect, like "an ember in a fire we just had to keep alive"-- then built new systems around Mackenzie to give it life (again).
Eventually, this led to Ian's hire. Right place, right time, right intention, a healthy amount of trust-- all true. But it was Ian who put himself in position to be there for that opportunity, move across the country for it, and to take on a juggling role selling handmade golf bags to the most interesting customers golf has to offer.
We hope you enjoy this episode with Ian Critser.

Its the flavor of the week, and you bet that we're having it. Although we aren't super passionate about rollback from a standpoint of what the players think about it, etc. we do have a lot of interest in thinking about how this changes the landscape of the game with regard to where we play and how we play those places.
There is a bit of an overlooked conversation in the game about the obsolescence of so many of our best ballparks due to the distance the ball travels these days. Rolling the ball back with the intention of bringing more of our gem courses back into relevance would be a massively positive thing for the game, and that's what we're here to break down today.
We hope you all enjoy this chat!
