Colin Sheehan is a total Renaissance man. From college golfer to world traveler, writer, course design enthusiast, college golf coach, and now full time consultant for new destination golf course projects, the man has done and continues to do it all.

Today, we touch on a bit of all of those things. His past with the Yale golf team. Some of his fondest memories coaching at his alma mater for 15 seasons. Some of the lessons he will take from that stage of his career into his new endeavors. What he is most excited for in the game from a cultural and architectural standpoint, and a whole lot more.

The best part of pro golf or any pro sport is the figures we follow and how they develop as characters over time. This game certainly has many of them, but arguably none better than Rahm and Brooks in the current landscape of the game.

These are two guys who have had long careers in the spotlight, a ton of success, plenty of controversy, and have changed who they are and how they want to be seen many times throughout their careers.

To us, what makes each of these guys really intriguing as characters is that by in large their guiding light as athletes who live in the public light is simply authenticity. While sometimes they may curate answers and acts to the public, by in large they live by who they are, and allow people to take it or leave it.

Hello friends! James Ellis-Caird joins us today from the clubhouse Whitby Golf Club on the eastern coastline of the UK. 

James is a teacher focused on not only performance, but also enjoyment. The through-line of this podcast is his book, "The Uncorrupted Pleasure of an Old Bladed Putter" which we both reference often throughout the conversation.

We talk a lot these days about pace of play and it's importance to the professional golf product. How it make pro golf more or less enjoyable to watch, whether there are steps that need to be taken to speed the game up, and a whole lot more.

The conversation that often gets lost on us all is how the pro game and the pace of play we see out there trickles down into lower competitive levels as well as just the recreational game. Today, Andy I and break down how what we see out on tour affects what we see in all levels of the game and why the pace of play conversation matters to all of us who are golfers. While it would be great to see PGATour rounds take 20% less time, what would really be awesome is to see recreational golfers have more ability to get a round in that doesn't take all day.

Andy I and come up with a few solutions/breakdown some of the common discussions around the pro game and what can be done out there, as well as raise a few points around the recreational game and how we can try to speed things up for the regular golfer through changing the narrative on spending money to spend time on a golf course as well as the level of respect golfers have for one another from a standpoint of holding people up on course.

Let's go ahead and get it out there. FAZ. It was a big week with the FAZ. That said, this episode is not meant to berating of Tommy Fazio and our less than favorable opinion of his architectural style. More so, we are here to talk about Quail as it pertains to competitive golf, as well as the architectural merits of the course.

Is Quail our favorite golf course in the world? Nope. Would we want to play it every day? No chance. Are there many things that could make it better. Yes. Hammer the yes. But, BUT, as a PGA Tour course, its pretty damn good. It asks the right questions of players and tests them actually the way you would hope a PGA Tour course would.

Tie Course Reviews is back for more and today we have three new categories of courses for you all:

First off, great fast paced golf courses. These are places where not only is fast play possible, but is highly valued by those who play the course. A joy of a walk that displays the simplicity of the game and how it doesn't take much to create a high quality experience.

Second, courses that examine the full bag. Tournament play is going  to be what really makes this place shine as the ultimate test of a competitor isn't necessarily how he good is she with one or two tools, but how many tools is she competent with. These courses can be fun, but also fairly challenging for the less practiced golfer.

Lastly, we will chat about courses that display subtle difficulty. This is the antithesis of late 90's "Open Doctored" sort of golf that is all about length, rough, and narrow fairways. Rather, these courses will show difficulty through the use of hazards in a very organic manner, as well as through making shortgrass the ultimate penalty of the game. Strategy and understanding of holes will be at a premium.

Robert Nelson believes in three natural cycles so much, that he dedicated his career to it. By understanding, and mimicking the water cycle, the carbon cycle, and the life cycle, he has been able to transform sites once sterilized for golf construction, making them whole again.

At The Tie Podcast,  we like to interview people with WILD understandings of this game. Robert's work could be described as *just* a compliment to other architects designs. And though many see the beauty of this philosophy, few allocate funds to make it happen.

What I know is, the results speak for themselves. An added benefit being that this work only gets better with time. When you collaborate with nature, you tend to get more friendly bounces than working against it.

Lets be honest, the Zurich has seen better days. Many of the guys in the field this week probably havent been a real part of the pro golf storyline in multiple years. To get this thing back on the rails, either we need more good players, or just some teams that make things more fun, so naturally we have gravitated toward the latter part of that conversation.
