Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist, took a call from a colleague, a child abuse doctor in Ohio.
Hours after the Supreme Court action, the Buckeye state had outlawed any abortion after six weeks. Now this doctor had a 10-year-old patient in the office who was six weeks and three days pregnant.
Could Bernard help?
So... an obstetrician-gynecologist "took a call" from a colleague? How many degrees of separation are we looking at here? I count four. The parents, the child abuse doctor, Dr. Bernard, and finally the Columbus Dispatch...  Not to mention the hundreds of other articles that use the Star as their primary source for this supposed case.
Now, I know doctors can't just reveal information about their patients... But HIPAA laws aside, a respectable news organization or journalist would at least look for the parents of said child, wouldn't they? Or ask for more solid proof to back up the story?

To find out, we reached out to Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist based in Indianapolis and who spoke to The Columbus Dispatch, about the headline-generating story. As of this writing, Bernard had not returned our request for an interview, and we had not been able to independently corroborate the abortion claim. If we receive additional information, will update this post.
