It commemorates the end of slavery and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, that all slaves were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a day of reflection, celebration of African American heritage, and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality. In 2021, it became a federal holiday, signifying its significance in American history.
