The Unseen Podcast

On the 10th of November 1994, 31 year old Mum Shona Stevens popped to the shops on the Bourtreehill estate in Irvine, Scotland. She was just nipping out to grab one can of Guinness at the local Co-op at just after Midday. Little did anyone know that she would be attacked and murdered on her way home just yards from her house. Shona's case is still unsolved despite some publicity just last year in 2021.

On the 29th of July 1981, Vishal Mehrotra had been watching the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana with his family in London where he lived. While the rest of the country and the world continued to watch the festivities, 8 year old Vishal disappeared from a street in Putney. His remains were found 7 months later in Surrey and foul play was thought to be involved. The events following this would lead the police and the public down a dark and terrifying road and one which has not led to this case being solved.

On the 5th of November 1983, 26 year old Lloyd Simpson was shot twice in his flat in Shoreditch in London. He seemed like an unlikely victim of such an execution style murder and the police couldn't understand why it had happened. His murder was featured on only the 5th released episode of Crimewatch however nothing was discovered about the killer or killers. Lloyd's case is the only Crimewatch episode where a picture of the victim hasn't been released. His case is still unsolved.

In this special episode, Jess from the Outlines Podcast and I bring you two short episodes. While these episodes have no connection and take place decades apart, they have two women at their heart who have been forgotten over the years. Both of these cases discuss issues involving the way mental health has been approached over the years and even the way that true crime has been reported in the newspapers. Importantly, they are both cases where open verdicts have been reached. After the episodes, Jess and I have a more candid chat about our own thoughts and walk you through our research process.

On the 6th of July 1984, Bill Hodge dropped his wife Marion off at the Whitesands bus station near Lockerbie in Scotland. She never returned home and nobody has seen her since. None of her bank accounts have been touched in the years since she disappeared and the reason for her disappearance is unknown.

She left on her son's 15th birthday and her family know she would never have done this. Police have since changed her missing person case to a murder investigation.
