It's a zombie jamboree! Twenty years ago in October 2003, Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" comic [and eventual cross-media IP] kicked off a zombie-mania which has arguably oversaturated the genre for decades to come. We hop into the time machine to discuss a pair of older black&white indie zombie comics -- 1986's DEADWORLD from Arrow Comics, and 1989's THE WALKING DEAD from Aircel Comics [no relation to the Kirkman series!] Why does the pop-culture landscape love & keep returning to zombies? What are a few of your favorite pieces of zombie-media? Let us know!

Shocktober is here! Our first spooOOooky reading of the month is Emily Carroll's THROUGH THE WOODS -- her first nightmare-inducing printed collection of short horror tales, which was published in 2014 after a few years of Emily creating (and continuing to create!) horror webcomics which often use the medium of reading-on-the-internet in very clever ways. Those can still be read online at https://emcarroll.com/ , and the incredibly acclaimed THROUGH THE WOODS collection of print-only stories is available wherever books or sold or through your local library.

What else are we reading?

Mike loves the first issue of SWAN SONGS -- a new anthology series of one-shot stories about endings, written by W. Maxwell Prince of ICE CREAM MAN fame!

Justin loves the new Stan Lee comic biography I AM STAN by Tom Scioli of GODLAND and GO-BOTS fame!

The paranormal investigator known as DYLAN DOG was created by Tiziano Sclavi in 1986 and has had over 400 magazine-sized comic issues published in his native Italy, very few of which have ever been officially translated into English. Can this very episode change that??? We hope so, as Dylan Dog is awesome. Find and read some of his spooky adventures this October!

---

What else are we reading?

Mike loves MANIAC OF NEW YORK by Elliot Kalan & Andrew Mutti from AfterShock Comics!

Justin loves the new BLACKWOOD: Library Edition by Evan Dorkin, Veronica Fish & Andy Fish from Dark Horse Comics!

THE WALKING DEAD ... not the Kirkman series, but the original Aircel Comics series from 1989! Along with DEADWORLD from 1986 and a discussion of zombie comics in general!

THE LAST HALLOWEEN by Abby Howard, available in a collected edition, and readable online here: https://www.last-halloween.com/

THE SIMPSONS' TREEHOUSE OF HORROR - the Halloween special published annually from 1995-2017 by Matt Groening's Bongo Comics, available in back issue bins everywhere, as well as a new collected omnibus edition!
