In today's episode I speak with novelist, author, and professor Mecca Jamilah Sullivan, Ph.D. Our conversation focuses on her coming of age young adult debut novel Big Girl.

Mecca is the author of the novel Big Girl, a New York Times Editors’ Choice and winner of the 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Award for First Novel, Blue Talk and Love, winner of the Judith Markowitz Award from Lambda Literary, and The Poetics of Difference: Queer Feminist Forms in the African Diaspora, winner of the William Sanders Scarborough Prize from the MLA. She has earned honors from Bread Loaf, the Institute for Citizens and Scholars, the Mellon Foundation, the Center for Fiction, the NEA and others. Originally from Harlem, NY, she is an Associate Professor of English at Georgetown University and lives in Washington DC.

In today's episode I speak with Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic. Tomas is the author of the book I, Human: AI, Automation, and the Quest to Reclaim What Makes Us Unique. We talk about AI's ability to predict good leaders, and how this new technology can aide in better selecting people, free of bias.

In today's episode I speak with trauma surgeons Drs. Morad Hameed and Elliott Haut. With the announcement of President Biden's first-ever federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, today's conversation is on point. We chat gun violence in the USA and Canada and discuss the Stop The Bleed campaign. Morad and Elliott speak on what they do to prevent burnout in themselves given that they are exposed to so much trauma themselves.

The STOP THE BLEED® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. 

Morad Hameed is a trauma surgeon and intensivist at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed medical school and surgical residency at the University of Alberta, graduate studies in public health at Harvard University, and fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Miami.

Freyd is an extensively published scholar who is best known for her theories of betrayal trauma, DARVO, institutional betrayal, and institutional courage.Freyd is the Founder and President of the Center for Institutional Courage, Professor Emerit[ of Psychology at the University of Oregon, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine,[Faculty Fellow at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, Affiliated Faculty, Women's Leadership Lab, Stanford University, and principal investigator of the Freyd Dynamics Lab. Freyd settled a lawsuit she filed against the University of Oregon after learning that the university was paying her $18,000 less per year than male colleagues closest in rank to her. The university agreed to pay her $350,000 to cover her claims for damages and her attorneys’ fees and also agreed to donate $100,000 to the Center for Institutional Courage.

Kevin Webb is a higher education training professional specializing in Title IX compliance and gender-based violence prevention, as well as equity and inclusion. Kevin has developed, implemented, and facilitated in-person and online training and education programs for students, faculty, and staff at large public and private universities, and produced a variety of education and awareness events around sexual assault and relationship violence prevention in collaboration with campus and community partners. Kevin has developed content for online Title IX/sexual misconduct training implemented by a cross section of American colleges and universities, and provided sexual harassment training for private organizations.
