Voice4Chefs Chef Checkin Mini Series:
Chef Maria is Introducing the Break the Ice Dinner Series: community-wide events to support mental health in our Food & Beverage community. We know it isn’t easy to talk about mental health. We want to make it easier. That’s why we’ve invited some of our favorite Philly-area establishments to host events where we can really talk about the issues our friends & family are facing. These dinners will be a chance to support spots that care about mental health, while helping to grow our Community Fund to support food service workers.
Each event is unique. Follow Cooks Who Care and the individual spots you are interested in visiting to stay up-to-date on event info.
Here’s the schedule so far:

From watching the Galloping Gourmet and learning cooking by his mother’s side, Chef Jack was always fascinated by food. His mother encouraged him to go to culinary school. Taking care that every dish has its own good individual texture, taste, and appearance, he navigated his way from line cook to executive chef and revolutionizing how banquet food looks and tastes while navigating large resort properties and their menus. Now, he owns, The bistro specializing in food without confusion. It’s an eclectic cuisine from clam chowder to pork chops all tucked away in the beachfront Cannon Beach. Tune in to hear about his adventures including nose kazoo lessons with a certain Hollywood star.

Chef Sarah Monson was in misery at a butcher shop, then all of a sudden, with the pandemic on the horizon, every person in the restaurant industry lost their job overnight. She tells a story of how inspiration comes from some of the darkest places. Like many cooks and chefs, Sara lost her job. At the beginning of the pandemic, she overcame adversity and rose to the challenge of creating "“The Cookbook”, connecting chefs across Seattle. She had an idea to create a community cookbook that gave purpose to so many restaurant workers who were out of work. The recipes came from the heart and souls of chefs and cooks in Seattle. Listen as Sarah tells her story and reveals how many ways you can be an artist. You don't need a brush or a pencil, a whisk or spoon will do!

In this episode we travel to the Philippines and talk about the Travelling Spoon and Eat Matters with Chef Isi. She will capture your soul with hospitality and food culture.
Isi has been in the food business for over ten years - creating recipes for dairy companies and restaurants, doing food styling and photography and selling spices online. She has recently started "Chili Asylum", an institution dedicated to marketing fresh chilies and chilli products sourced directly from Filipino farmers. Isi says she learned everything she knows about cooking from her Nanay (grandmother) who she watched cook fresh lunches and dinners everyday growing up. Isi loves cooking and serving the local, regional food she grew up eating. Isi enjoys collaborating with other chefs and food lovers in the food business to create new and delicious food.

Having served in just about every role from executive chef, tournant, expediter, and saucier to consulting chef, and many in between, he draws from his collective experience to build upon his newest role as a food product developer. Now with Atlanta as his home base, Chef Ed has launched a line of products that include specialty spices, vegan recipes, breakfast foods, and cookbooks, in addition to a line of designer aprons. If he isn't crafting a new flavor fusion in the kitchen, at times he can be found behind the camera, as Ed has appeared on several food shows. He was the winner of Food Network's CHOPPED "Turbot Powered" competition and has been on "Beat Bobby Flay", "Chef Wanted" with Anne Burrell, and a few others.
Though his passion for cooking runs deep in his veins, community service is something he holds dear to his heart. He has participated in several events to help raise funds for different charities. Some of the organizations he has volunteered for include Autism Speaks, Taste of New York, and the James Beard Foundation.
