  • 66. Where the Practical Meets Jesus: Academics
Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany sits down to continue the series on where the practical meets Jesus. The heart of these conversations is to engage in the real-life moments that we experience as mamas but understand them from a gospel perspective.

This week, Bethany is visiting a topic that she has experienced in her household, also stemming from a conversation with a mama whose child is battling comparison in academics.

Bethany reminds her listeners of the five truths that need to be put in place :

    • We are shepherding a soul that is in need of a savior
    • Ask for God’s wisdom
    • Be consistent
    • Pray
    • Speak words of life to your child

God has designed each of our children uniquely and has gifted each child with different talents and strengths for kingdom work. And, when our children are wrestling with feelings of not measuring up, we must sit with them and understand what they are hearing, what they are feeling, and then remind them of their unique gifts.

Bethany uses her five pillars to help you understand your child’s thoughts and how you can walk together in truth in what God speaks over them. Bethany encourages us to see our children’s struggles from a bigger spiritual perspective. And, to ask ourselves what is the truth your child needs to hear right now to combat those lies?

Bethany welcomes you to share some of your favorite moments or maybe some of your most difficult moments of motherhood.

  • 65. Where the Practical Meets Jesus

Welcome back to the kitchen table. This week, Bethany is tackling conversations that are constantly circling through motherhood that most mamas have, have had, or will have. The why won’t my baby sleep, or will my child ever be potty trained conversations.

Bethany provides practical advice that intersects with the Gospel, allowing mama’s to rest easy and remember that YOU are the chosen one for your child. While sleep training, potty training, and character training can serve as struggles in our motherhood, they are also holy places where God invites you to hold his hand.

When we stay practical yet intertwine the Gospel, we understand that we were invited into motherhood because God entrusted this soul in you because he believes you are the best mama for this child. During these moments of defeat, we can turn to the Lord to ask for help, guidance, and perspective to better understand the heart and soul of this child.

Bethany provides us with five ways to take truth from the word to apply it to our children during these moments of motherhood.

    1. Understand there is a soul that is in need of a savior.2. Ask God for wisdom. Seek a plan by turning to God.3. Choose consistency. 4. Pray. Pray. Pray.5. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Encourage one another and build each other up. Speak words of life to your children.

On the days when you have done everything when you are struggling and dismayed. Be not dismayed. I am your God. Fear, not mama, I am with you. Isaiah 41:10

  • 64. How Do We Handle Anger w/ Natalie Hixson

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany sits down with Natalie Hixson, who shares her testimony, struggles, and triumphs with anger in motherhood. Natalie's story is relatable, and it's a battle that many mothers are going through silently.

Natalie and Bethany offer hope and guidance in giving it to God during these unbearably messy moments in motherhood. Natalie shares methods in understanding our emotions, reining them in and learning to seek God first. Turn these messy moments back to the Lord, sit with him, and use these as moments of learning.

Natalie helps us to clearly understand what destructive anger looks like, and she provides us with amazing tools to create awareness around the triggers to help you gain more control over outbursts.

Natalie uses the sit and pray technique to work through those challenging moments where we need a break. Separate, inhale, tune in to what you're feeling. And then invite God into the equation.

God is walking with you. He is committed to you even during those difficult moments of motherhood.

    About Natalie:

  • 63. Turning to Jesus for Resetting and Realigning w/ Joy Pitner

Welcome back to the kitchen table. This week Bethany is joined by an amazing woman, mom, and friend, Joy Pitner. Bethany and Joy take a deeper look beyond the cultural narrative that as women and mothers, we need a glass of wine especially after the tough days.

We are culturally conditioned to turn to everywhere but Christ in moments of overwhelm or even in times of celebrations. But, instead of picking up that glass of wine when you need a re-set, take a moment and let Jesus realign and reframe you.

By asking yourself these questions, you can better equip yourself to stand in truth and stay grounded in scripture rather than let the world define truth for you.

    • Where is my heart?
    • What is going to bring me peace?
    • What is going to heal my wounds?

Joy floods us with wisdom and reminds us how Jesus is our mainstay. He is bigger than natural knowledge, and by standing on promises, we can begin to shift our perspective into seeking the Lord to realign us.

Jesus is bigger than all of the other things, and even when you seek him at the end of a tough day, there is no judgment because he calls us. And by reminding ourselves through the Gospel and scripture, we can combat the cultural normals and remember that God is bigger than all things.

About Joy: Joy lives in South Carolina on a small homestead with her husband and two children. Joy has a passion for gospel-centered hospitatitly, and loves delighting people with food, creating inviting spaces, and teaching others simple ways to do the same.

  • 62. When You Tired of Running the Race
Welcome back to the kitchen table. Are you feeling the constant stretch and pull of the world? Are you running a race that you can’t possibly win? This week, Bethany dives deeper into understanding the spiritual race and how to run it while staying anchored in God’s truth.

Bethany shares her feelings and experiences of overwhelm, anxiety, apathy, and anger. She talks about how the lies from the enemy whisper powerfully inside of us during these moments of weakness. But, we must identify these lies and take a deep breath of God’s grace and mercy.

We live in a culture that has shaped us to believe that failure and success equate to our identity. We are led to believe that our end result is what matters. But, in fact, our identity is given by God. Our identity was created at the cross, and we are provided a beautiful role. Bethany offers scriptures for how our identity is declared in Jesus Christ. Philippines 3:9, Romans 8, and Ephesians 2:10.

Jesus Christ is the source of our worth and our dignity. We can stand in his truth regardless of what obstacles are thrown our way.

God wants to run this with you, and we need to return to understanding who we are in the gospel.

Colossians 3:1-4 speaks to the spiritual race so profoundly, and Bethany encourages you to keep this one in the forefront of your mind. And while you may need to reset your mind each day, remember that God’s mercy, grace, and love flow over you even on the hard days.

  • 61. When Mistakes Mount Up: Applying the Gospel to Our Mom Mistakes

Welcome back to the kitchen table. This week Bethany sits down with Jennifer Pepito for a fantastic conversation on battling feelings of fear, guilt, and shame when it comes to mistakes. Not only mistakes that we make as parents but also walking through our children’s mistakes.

As moms, we battle with fear, especially when it comes to parenting. And, when our children make mistakes, we can instantly experience guilt, embarrassment, and failure. Both Bethany and Jennifer provide a wealth of wisdom on how we can combat those feelings and how we can join our children and walk through mistakes without shame. But instead by applying grace and forgiving ourselves.

Parenting isn’t perfect, but God did not intend it to be. And, he doesn’t shame us when we make mistakes. It’s a calm conversation. In moments where we meet our children with shame, rage, and big emotions, we can step back and ask God for forgiveness and turn to scripture to guide us through our mistakes.

We are often overcome by fear when we raise our children because we want them to love God, have a happy life, and follow Jesus. And, oftentimes we focus on behavior and performance, and fear mistakes. Where instead we can learn to walk by their side offering  reconciliation and forgiveness when your child might fall from the path. But, with the Gospel and Jesus, we can remind ourselves that we are beloved by him and extend this grace to our children.

  • 57. Parenting Intentionally in Overwhelming Moments Part 1

Welcome back to the kitchen table. This week Bethany is addressing the question, how can I be intentional with my kids when I am feeling burnt out? Many moms out there are probably feeling this way, you want to teach, have meaningful conversations, and plan fun activities. But, at the end of the day you feel defeated, burnt out, and you don’t have the energy. Bethany is walking in the same exact shoes, but she gives guidance, encouragement and scripture to help you find a middle ground.

When we let the Holy Spirit tend to us, it begins to reframe our minds to be set on the gospel. God is the only one who can fill us when we feel defeated, and overwhelmed in motherhood.

Bethany shares how she must see, hear, and constantly be reminded of the truth that Jesus says. She engages with the five truths when she reaches feelings of overwhelm, anger, or resentment.

The Five Truths When Life Feels Crazy

    • God Chose You- Matthew 11:28-29
    • God Engages and Listens- Psalm 116: 1-2 & Psalm 66:19
