Life has a way of throwing us unexpected challenges. Some are small hurdles, while others shake the very foundation of who we are. For Laura Breton, the challenge came at the age of nine when she was diagnosed with a rare retinal disease—one that doctors said would eventually take her sight. By the time she was in her late teens, the world around her had faded into darkness.
But Laura’s story is not one of defeat—it’s one of grit, gratitude, and transformation.
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Imagine being a carefree child, playing basketball, dancing, and doing everything a nine-year-old loves—only to be told that one day, you will no longer be able to see. For Laura, those words didn’t fully sink in at first. She continued her life as usual, unaware of how drastically things would change.
Then, during her teenage years, the decline began. The world she once knew slowly blurred until, by eighteen, nearly all of her vision was gone.
The loss was not just physical—it was deeply emotional. Laura found herself battling depression, panic attacks, and self-doubt. She felt overwhelmed, telling herself, “I can’t do this.” And yet, piece by piece, she found her way forward.
From Darkness to Determination
What helped Laura shift her mindset? A support system that treated her with dignity and normalcy.
Her family didn’t lower their expectations because of her blindness—they simply adapted. Her older brother continued to treat her as his sister, not as someone fragile. Her parents still gave her chores, ensuring she remained an active part of the household.
“It wasn’t about pretending nothing had changed,” Laura says. “It was about making adjustments while still seeing me as capable.”
That shift in perspective was crucial. It taught Laura that limitations are real, but they don’t have to define us.
The Turning Point: Learning to Walk with Courage
The defining moment of Laura’s transformation came when she received her first guide dog between high school and college. She spent a month training at a specialized school, learning how to navigate the world in a new way.
It was during this experience that she had a revelation: “I have to choose courage.”
For years, she had relied on others to help her adjust, but now it was up to her. She had to be the one to pick up the harness and take the first step. And in doing so, she discovered something powerful—her resilience had been there all along.
Grit and Gratitude: The Formula for Transformation
Today, Laura is a professional speaker and coach, helping others navigate life’s changes using a framework she calls Grit and Gratitude.
* Grit is about taking things one step at a time. Some days, it was about getting through just an hour. Then two. Then a whole day. Building resilience happens in small, deliberate steps.
* Gratitude isn’t about pretending hardships don’t exist—it’s about acknowledging the pain while also recognizing the strength and support that carry you through it.
Laura reminds us that gratitude isn’t about being thankful for suffering. It’s about being thankful for what empowers us through suffering.
Owning Your Power
When asked if she has fully embraced her life today, Laura says, “Yes. Because that’s where courage comes from.”
She no longer fights against the reality of her blindness. Instead, she owns her journey, using it as a force for good. Every day, she helps others face their fears, embrace change, and step into their strength.
