United States President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency over the spread of Coronavirus in the United States. The declaration will free up some 50 billion dollars in disaster relief to assist states and local municipalities fight the pandemic which has infected over 1800 people in the country and claimed more than 40 lives. The President has invoked the Stafford Act which allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency known as FEMA to coordinate the national emergency response. The Health Department has confirmed that a second person has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus in South Africa -- this time in the Gauteng. The patient is a 39-year old woman, who was in direct contact with the 38-year old man from KZN, who was recently confirmed as SA's first case of the virus. The two were part of a group that travelled to Italy and arrived back in the country on the first of March. The man is from KwaZulu Natal and has been hospitalised for treatment. Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, says more than 300 people have been tested for the corona virus, while another 18, who were in contact with the only diagnosed South African, have been quarantined. The World Health Organisation in Africa has called on communities to look out for information on how to deal with the outbreak of corona virus in their areas. It says communities should be well informed on the virus in order to curb the spread of rumours and misinformation. The organisation says it has been assessing the continent's preparedness to deal with the virus and prioritising public awareness. Cases have been confirmed in Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria. Members of the Gauteng Electricity Movement have vowed to continue with their shutdown in protest over electricity cuts. They also want Eskom to stop installing prepaid meters and are demanding that the power utility reconnect all homes that had their electricity cut-off. Two Gauteng grade eight learners who had been reported missing have been re-united with their families. Fourteen-year-old Lindokuhle Masuku from Queens high school was allegedly kidnapped while waiting at the school gate on Monday. On the same day 15-year-old Kate Spies from Lantern School for learners with special needs in Roodepoort west of Johannesburg was also reported missing. It is alleged that the kidnappers made a 5-million rand ransom for his release. Meanwhile, the Gauteng Education Department has urged schools to be vigilant and ensure that the safety of learners is not compromised.
