An independent energy expert says although he welcomes the appointment of a new Eskom board, he is concerned that most of the board members do not have experience in the energy sector. Jabu Mabuza will head up the board appointed by government in the hope of restoring confidence in the parastatal. The announcement came after a meeting with President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown and Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba on Friday. The board has been instructed to appoint a permanent CEO and remove executives facing allegations of corruption and acts of impropriety. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he will be meeting with all stakeholders this week in order to address the violence that took place outside Hoerskool Overvaal in Vereeniging this past week and at other schools in Soweto. Members of the ANC and the EFF protested outside Hoerskool Overvaal following the Afrikaans medium school's court victory against the department which sought to have 55 English speaking learners placed at the school. The court said the department did not follow due process and also highlighted that there were places available for the learners at nearby English medium schools. Learners wishing to further their studies at institutions of higher learning but did not apply in time, will be assisted. The Department of Higher Education is calling on them to apply to the Central Applications Clearing House, which falls under the department. This comes as the EFF Student Command has called on students, including those who did not apply, to report to their preferred institutions of higher learning to register. This is in response to President Jacob Zuma's announcement last month that tertiary education will be free in 2018. However, authorities say there is no need for students to go to tertiary institutions in person, but rather use the online services.
