The executive council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal has criticized the SRC's call for vice chancellor Albert Van Jaarsveld and the rest of senior management to step down. The SRC accused the institution's executive management of being dysfunctional with agreements reached with students not being implemented. Mother Teresa will officially be declared a saint at the Vatican in Rome today. In the Catholic Church, this is the highest honour bestowed on individuals, who people regard as holy, who have diede. Mother Teresa died at the age of 87 nearly two decades ago. The process of declaring her a saint began two years after her death, in 1999. Four years later she was beatified and declared Blessed Mother Teresa by Pope John Paul.

Pretoria High School for Girls code of conduct clause banning African learners from wearing their natural afro-hair and dred-lock hair has been temporarily suspended. This follows a protest by learners who alleged that the code of conduct was used to promote racial tendencies and racism at the English speaking Girls High School in Pretoria. The racism incident compelled the provincial government and local clergy groups to intervene.

Zimbabwe police have been fighting running battles with hundreds of opposition protestors in Harare. Police used teargas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators. The High Court also earlier gave opposition parties the go-ahead to march for electoral reforms. Protesters pelted police vehicles with stones, and barricaded roads with burning tyres, rubbish bins and rocks. Opposition parties have united to push for reforms ahead of 2018 polls. The Free Market Foundation has expressed concerns over the proposed Financial Sector Regulation Bill, known as the twin peaks bill. The foundation says that the new system has no identifiable benefits and is being launched in times of economic hardships when it can be least afforded. We had a chat with Free Market Foundation executive director Leon Louw and Ismail Momoniat, deputy director general for tax and financial sector policy at the national treasury.

As we continue to celebrate women's month, it has emerged that positive strides have been made as far as women's participation in the labour market. Statistics show that it has dramatically increased in recent decades indicating a relatively high participation compared to South Africa's peers. However there's still concerns that their rights are most at risk in regard to gender equality, with specifc concern surrounding general patterns and forms of unfair discrimination including pay inequality, with women consistently paid less than men for equal work. It is with this in mind, that the institute of justice and reconciliation (IJR) is hosting
a forum on how to create gender just organisations and workplaces. We earlier spoke Ayanda Nyoka, project leader for the inclusive economies project at IJR.

Several companies in the sweetened beverages industry are concerned that the proposed tax on sweetened beverages will lead to job losses. The National Treasury published a policy paper last month proposing a 20 percent tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) to take effect in April 2017.
