The Whispering Woods : True Ghost Stories & Paranormal Encounters

In this week’s episode, we’re diving into the folklore of the Brecon Beacons, Heol Fanog, and Pen y Fan.

We’ll explore the mysterious Lady of the Lake at Llyn y Fan Fach, and delve into the Arthurian connections of Pen y Fan, and let’s not forget the haunting of Heol Fanog, also known as "Hellfire Farm," a site infamous for its paranormal activity.

Is it all just folklore passed down through generations, or could there be more to these legends than meets the eye?

This week's extra episode takes a look at the intriguing world of paranormal experiments, starting with the Philip Experiment conducted in the 1970s by Dr. A.R.G. Owen and the Toronto Society for Psychical Research. The experiment aimed to test whether a fictional ghost could be created through the collective belief of a group. By inventing a character, Philip Aylesford, and holding séances, the group triggered seemingly paranormal phenomena, such as table movements and knocking sounds, which were interpreted as evidence of psychokinesis. The results sparked a debate between believers in the power of the mind over physical reality and skeptics who saw the phenomena as products of subconscious influence.

The episode also covers the Rice Experiment, which explored the concept of thought forms and their impact on physical objects. This experiment involved a group of people attempting to manifest paranormal activity through concentrated belief. Additionally, the story of Matthew Manning, a British man known for his psychic abilities, is explored, highlighting his purported ability to influence electrical systems and create spontaneous healing effects. These experiments shed light on the complexities of human consciousness and belief, raising questions about the connection between the mind and the paranormal.

In this week’s episode, we’re diving into something both strange and fascinating: the Mandela Effect. It’s named after the widespread belief that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s, a memory a lot of people share, even though it never actually happened. This bizarre phenomenon makes us wonder how reliable our memories really are, and maybe even if reality is as solid as we think.

We’ve also got two stories lined up that will really get you thinking - a forgotten school friend who seems to have never existed and a strange encounter where someone feels like they’ve become an older version of themselves.

Is it all just memory playing tricks, or is something deeper at work?

In this week's extra episode, we have one long piece on the Triora Witch Trials, often called the Salem of Europe. We dive into the dark and chilling history of this medieval Ligurian town, where paranoia and fear led to one of Italy’s most infamous witch hunts.

We explore how a deadly famine in the late 1500s fuelled accusations of witchcraft, scapegoating women for crop failures and misfortunes. The trials uncovered alleged covens, sinister rituals, and supernatural curses, with tales of midnight gatherings, deals with the devil, and hexes cast on entire families. Many women were tortured into confessing to impossible crimes, including summoning storms and causing livestock to perish.

But was it truly witchcraft? Or a mass hysteria born of fear, religion, and misogyny? We’ll uncover how these trials left a haunting legacy, still present in the cobblestone streets and shadowy corners of Triora today.
