This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 9 “Malleus Maleficarum”.  Sam and Dean investigate a series of mysterious deaths in a small town, which leads them to a group of housewives practicing witchcraft under the guise of a book club.

We discuss our feelings about how witches are portrayed on the show; the, probably unintentional, sexism and misogyny in this episode, and why the patriarchy is threatened by witches and pagans in general.

We also discuss how good the gore is in this episode, although we both could have done without the teeth falling out scene; why Ruby is such an interesting character; and how Laura’s car is haunted.

Joy’s Easter egg is about the location of Sturbridge, Massachusetts and its real links to the Salem Witch Trials,

including the story of Rebecca Nurse.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 8 “A Very Supernatural Christmas”. Sam and Dean come face to face with pagan gods who are sacrificing humans around Christmas time.

We discuss how, yet again, John is the worst Dad by leaving young Sam and Dean to fend for themselves at Christmas; how much we love awkward Sam; and how Dean is such a himbo, and we love him for that.

We also discuss how well the Pagan Gods blend into suburbia, like a 50’s sitcom; how some of the lore around the pine trees being used to kill the Gods don’t really fit from a witchcraft perspective, however it does fit the plot of a Christmas episode; and how cute the necklace origin story is!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about some of the plants mentioned for the Pagan rituals, including meadowsweet; and the origins of Jared Padalecki’s Always Keep Fighting campaign during the filming of this episode, which makes both of us cry!

This week Joy and Laura are discussing season 3 episode 7 “Fresh Blood”, with our guests Steph and Kara from the Buffy rewatch podcast Prophecy Girls. 

In this episode Gordon escapes from prison to hunt The Winchesters down, but gets turned into a vampire!

We discuss the crossover cast members from both shows, as well as other links between the two shows, such as the differences between the Buffy vampires and Supernatural vampires.

We also discuss how Dean looks for indications of Sam possibly turning evil; how well the show depicts what it must feel like turning into a vampire, and how scary Gordon is as a vampire; how Dean threatening Bela’s life is probably foreplay; and Joy gets frustrated that she can’t talk about spoilers.

We also spend far too long discussing Jensen’s levels of hotness over the years, and Steph makes the case that Jensen should have been cast as Connor on Angel.

We discuss how this episode hasn’t aged well, especially the scenes with the older lady basically being a sexual predator; but also the bits we loved about this episode.

We also discuss how no one insults Baby and lives; how this episode has season 1 vibes; and the heist scenes where Sam isn’t having a fun time, but Bella and Dean are playing Catwoman and Batman if they were in Ocean’s 11.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 5 “Bedtime Stories”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of gruesome murders in a small town that seem to mirror fairy tales. 

We discuss how the show has changed what EMF detectors do; how good the little old lady is; and the frog who becomes our MVP of this episode.

We also call out Dean’s casual homophobia (Fairy Tales are for everyone Dean!) and how we think his character has changed at this point because he never used to seem like he had such fragile masculinity until recently, and Joy has a theory about why this might be. 

There’s also lots of discussion about Fairy Tales and their links to folklore and horror movies.

It’s our podcast anniversary! We can’t believe we have been doing this for 1 year already!

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 4 “Sin City”. Sam and Dean investigate a rise in violence and suicides in a small town, where demons have been influencing the residents; while Bobby and Ruby fix the Colt.

We discuss how this is our least favourite episode of season 3 so far, mainly because of the objectification of women in the script, and the general ick factor, but also because of the recurring demon dust; and we decide that we would have loved to see a whole episode of Ruby helping Bobby fix the Colt, rather than this one.

We also discuss how Dean is really not ok when he refuses to eat; and what happens to someone when they die and are resurrected, like both of our main characters have now, because what is happening to Sam?

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Elizabeth Town, Ohio and a haunted bar there; and also some information about different politicians who are dragged in this episode including Tony Perkins and Dick Cheney.

Welcome to season 3 Hunters!

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 1 “The Magnificent Seven”. Sam, Dean and Bobby face the Seven Deadly Sins, and meet a mysterious blonde woman with a mysterious knife that can kill demons.

We discuss our thoughts about Isaac, and what the hunters in general think about Sam and Dean. Why do they blame them for opening the gate to Hell?? Laura has a super disgusting fun fact, and Joy compares each of the characters to their deadly sin counterpart.
