The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

In this episode we are joined by the hosts of Spirits and Supernatural, Jenny and Dawn, as we break down season 5 episode 17 of Supernatural “99 Problems”.

We discuss how funny it is when Sam and Dean have to prove they are hunters to other people, Cas’ lack of knowledge about technology, and how Dean has given up leading him to be willing to be Michael’s vessel.

We also discuss drunk Sam and drunk Cas, and is Joy turning into a Sam girl?

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the Bible’s references to the Whore of Babylon.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

We discuss Jody Mills as this is her first episode and how Joy loves the character and thinks Laura will too.

We also discuss Bobby’s love for his wife and how much he has had to suffer in the duration of the show so far, and all the zombies!

Joy’s Easter egg is about Lazarus Syndrome, where people come back to life after being pronounced dead.

However, when other strange deaths start occurring they realise it's something bigger, and Cas works out that Famine, one of the four horsemen, is behind everything.

We discuss what made Dean dead inside, if “Dracula Sam” is hot, and the initial meeting with Cupid.

We also discuss the horseman Famine, how good the horror is in this episode, and how helpful Sam’s powers actually could be if Dean would let him use them.

Joy’s Easter egg is about cherubs.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 13 of Supernatural “The Song Remains The Same”. Sam and Dean go back in time to 1978 when the angel Anna threatens to kill their parents so Sam is never born, and Lucifer never rises.

We discuss when Cas started liking Sam, because didn’t he hate him until this episode? Is it trauma bonding?

We also discuss how Sam has never actually seen his parents properly until this episode, well he’s never seen Mary or an undamaged John anyway, and how Sam forgives his dad for everything he put them through, as well as our mixed feelings about Anna’s ending, and Joy also has an interesting interpretation of the final scene.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about things that happened in 1978 that line up with this episode, and sigil magic.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 12 of Supernatural “Swap Meat”. While Sam and Dean are in a town investigating poltergeist activity at the house of a former babysitter, Sam ends up in a body swap situation with a local teenager Gary.

We discuss the reasons why Laura doesn’t like this episode and Joy does like it, how Jared steals the show with his acting, and how good Sarah Drew is as Nora/the demon.

We also discuss how long it takes Dean to work out what is going on, Gary and Trevor and their entitlement, and how Gary is how Sam should really be in real life.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about body swapping magic in folklore, and hauntings and folklore from the location Housatonic, Massachusetts.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 11 of Supernatural “Sam, Interrupted”. Sam and Dean get themselves admitted to a psychiatric hospital to investigate reports of a monster that is killing patients.

We discuss how well this episode portrays a psychiatric hospital, how Dr Cartwright looks like Xena, and how nice it is that Martin is the hero of this episode.

We also discuss how we don’t actually like the “pudding!” scene as it’s stupid and gross. Is that the hottest take we have had on this podcast so far?? Maybe.

In lieu of an Easter egg this week we have insight from a psychologist, and also from someone who has experience of being in a psychiatric facility, giving us their thoughts about this episode.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 10 of Supernatural “Abandon All Hope…” Sam and Dean, along with Ellen, Jo and Castiel, go to Carthage, Missouri to find and kill Lucifer. However, upon their arrival Meg shows up with hell hounds in tow who attack the group, leaving Jo mortally wounded.

We discuss Jo and Ellen’s deaths, and Jo and Dean’s relationship and how they are perfect for each other. Don’t come for us, we have the receipts and you will not change our minds!

We also discuss Crowley who we meet for the first time this episode, how Jo’s death mirrors her father’s death, and how Meg is probably a bigger villain than Lucifer right now.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the lore in this episode of Carthage, Missouri during the Civil War and how true it is; and some Civil War ghost stories from this area.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 9 of Supernatural “The Real Ghostbusters”. Sam and Dean turn up at the first annual Supernatural convention and have to hunt a real threat amongst all of the LARPers pretending to be them.

We had so much fun on this episode! We discuss how we would love to go to this convention, how Hookman is like all Supernatural podcasters, and how Damien and Barnes are gay heroes.

We also discuss how meta this episode is, how the relationship between the Supernatural creators and the fandom is really special, and how Becky might actually be the MVP???

Joy’s Easter eggs are about how actress Crystal Lowe is a legit Scream Queen, and the story of the real Gore Orphanage, or Light of Hope Orphanage, that this episode is based on.
