The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

This week we are wrapping up Season 4 by talking about our highlights of the season, our hot takes and thoughts on the character arcs for season 4, behind the scenes fun facts about the final episode of the season, fandom facts, and as usual we finish by playing end of season games.

Joy has also brought back prank wars and reads some haunted doll stories to Laura.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

In this episode Joy, Laura and their guest Wally from The Wally Verse break down season 4 episode 22 “Lucifer Rising”. Sam and Dean are still at odds over Sam’s increasing reliance on Ruby and his demon-blood powers. Sam, convinced he must stop Lilith to prevent the apocalypse, continues working with Ruby to find and kill her. Meanwhile Dean has to deal with the angels who are trying to keep him away from Sam, because it is revealed that they in fact want Lillith to die as that is the final seal, and they want the apocalypse to happen. Dean works out what is going on and with Cas’ help gets to Sam to try and stop him, but it’s too late and the final seal gets broken freeing Lucifer.

We discuss Ruby’s character arc, how nerdy Sam and Dean really are, how the angelic teleporting works, and our thoughts about Destiel.

We also discuss the set design of the angel green room; how deep Azazel’s plot must have gone right from the start, due to what we see in the flashbacks in this episode; and who we think was behind the altered voicemail!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about a haunted college in the same place as this episode is set (St. Mary's College "Hell House" in Maryland) and other links to it too.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 21 “When The Levee Breaks”. In the penultimate episode of season 4 Sam escapes Bobby’s panic room, where he had been imprisoned by Dean and Bobby so he can detox from drinking demon blood, and meets up with Ruby to get his fix. She reassures him that he needs it to stop Lillith. Dean tracks them down and the brothers fight. This episode sets the stage for the season finale and marks one of the most intense breaking points in Sam and Dean’s relationship.

We discuss whose side we are on in the Sam vs Dean fight; Sam’s character arc this season and how he got to this point; and Joy shares her thoughts about the lighting for the opening scene.

We also discuss Sam’s hallucinations and what they mean; how Sam and Dean turn into John when they are in stressful situations; and whether the drinking blood scene is hot or not.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about a haunted hospital, and the gates of hell, in the location for this episode Jamestown, North Dakota.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 20 “The Rapture”. Sam and Dean find Castiel unconscious in some rubble after what looks like a huge fight between the angels. When he wakes up Cas is gone and his human vessel Jimmy Novak is back in his body.  Sam’s addiction to demon blood also continues to spiral out of control.

We discuss whether Sam acting like a vampire is hot or not, and the parallels with Sam’s blood drinking and addiction; Laura has some questions about how the demon blood actually works, and about Ruby’s motivations; and we also discuss our thoughts about Jimmy and Amelia as characters.

Joy’s Easter eggs are stories where angels have saved people.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 19 “Jump The Shark”. Sam and Dean receive a call from a young man named Adam Milligan, who claims to be John Winchester's son and go to meet him. They help Adam investigate the disappearance of his mother, but things take a dark turn when it’s revealed that Adam and his mother have already been killed, and ghouls have taken on their forms.

We play Kiss, Marry, Kill at the start. Then we discuss whether John is a better or worse dad for protecting Adam from the hunter life, Sam and Dean’s differing reactions to finding out about another sibling, and Laura feels sick from the enclosed spaces Dean has to be in during this episode.

We also discuss how disturbing it is when Dean finds Adam and Kate’s bodies, and how Dean pointing out Sam is like their father is the ultimate insult.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Ghouls within Islam and other folklore, including an account from a Medieval monk in England.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 18 “The Monster at the End of This Book”. Sam and Dean discover a series of books titled Supernatural, which turn out to be detailed accounts of their real lives as hunters, and track down the author.

We discuss how meta this episode is, how rebellious Cas is actually kinda hot, and Laura has a rant about Sam being a hypocrite.

We also discuss our love for the laundromat scene (it’s so funny!), our initial thoughts about Chuck, and whether Zachariah is as bad as Uriel.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about real prophecies that came true, including writers who have predicted things.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 17 “It’s A Terrible Life”.  Dean wakes up as Dean Smith, a corporate executive at Sandover Bridge & Iron Company, while Sam is Sam Wesson, a tech support worker at the same firm. Neither of them remembers their real lives as hunters. They have to team up to fight a ghost who is haunting the building and killing their colleagues.

We discuss how Dean is channeling Patrick Bateman and Sam is channeling Scooby Doo this episode; how we feel about the Ghostfacers this time; all of the gruesome deaths that happen; and how this episode is a much needed breather in what has been a dark season overall so far.

We also discuss our fear of lifts/elevators and what would be the better option if we found ourselves in a faulty lift that was about to drop; the ghost’s electric fingers; and how Zachariah actually has a good point at the end of the episode.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the links between the number 1444 and real deaths; the “Hound of the Baskervilles effect”; and an instance where a ghost reportedly killed someone.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 16 “On The Head of a Pin”. Dean is recruited by Castiel and Uriel to use the torture skills he learned in Hell to interrogate Alastair, a powerful demon they captured last episode, when other angels turn up murdered.

We discuss how we feel seeing Anna again, how both Sam and Dean are bad boys in this episode, how well Jared plays the darker side of Sam, and Sam’s descent into darkness as a whole.

We also discuss the comparisons between the dead angel at the start and Mary Winchester, the Destiel ship, Uriel’s character arc, and why do angels always meet at kids playgrounds?

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the origins of the Star of David/ six-sided star, and the links to magical practices; and how well the Biblical lore matches up to what is said in this episode.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 15 “Death Takes a Holiday”. Sam and Dean investigate a small town where people have stopped dying, even after fatal accidents occur, and discover that the reaper assigned to the town has vanished. The brothers use astral projection to leave their bodies and operate as spirits to find out what’s going on.

We discuss how bad Sam and Dean are at saving the seals from being opened, how whiny Dean is being, and our thoughts about the new iteration of Alistair.

We also discuss how rude it is that Dean doesn’t remember Tessa, and their whole dynamic; how Sam is a big sexy liar; how maybe they should have locked the motel room door before they went into a trance, and maybe they should have had a lookout who can actually see!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Joe the plumber, and real Grim Reaper encounters.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!
