This week Joy and Laura examine season 1 episode 10 “Asylum”.

This was a scary one! John sends the boys to a haunted asylum where they encounter the spirits of many patients and the creepy doctor, who it turns out is the villain of the episode, and Sam gets possessed and almost kills Dean! 

We consider whether Jensen did his own stunts, Joy is surprisingly on Team Sam this week, and we get annoyed at how many times everyone splits up…have they never seen a horror show before?? Side note: Did anyone hear where the action takes place in this episode as we aren’t sure, is it the south wing perhaps?

This week Joy and Laura are discussing season 1 episode 9 “Home”.

This was such a good episode and we finally get some more back story, which Laura has been desperately craving! Sam and Dean investigate a case in their old childhood home, and John Winchester shows back up although he hides from the boys. We discuss our love for the character Missouri, all the Stephen King references peppered throughout this episode, and Joy has an amazing show Easter egg which links to the backstory of why Lawrence, Kansas was chosen as the setting for the Winchester house.

This week Joy and Laura get into season 1 episode 8 “Bugs”. Bleurgh!

This episode was full of bugs and it was disgusting! We get into a debate about Sam and Dean’s feelings about their Dad which ends up being a bit like a therapy session. Laura gets Joy back for all the Bloody Mary stuff by telling her all about cockroaches here in the UK, and Joy starts a petition for screen doors to be fitted on all houses here.

We also get into the fact that they used REAL BEES in the attic scene, putting the actors in danger! Oh and who else noticed Dean’s “flamethrower”?

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 1 episode 7 “Hook Man”.

We discuss the nostalgia we feel for 90’s slasher movies, and go off on a bit of a Scream tangent. We also make links between Lori in this episode and Laurie Strode from the Halloween movies. We call out the hypocrisy of religious men, and explain why we think everyone should leave Taylor alone! Joy has another true crime Easter egg, that links to last week’s Easter egg, and Laura reveals what Lori and her Dad are having an argument about in the scene where Sam is keeping watch outside their house, although this is not really a secret if you also watch TV with the subtitles on.

We discuss our own experience with sleepover games, Joy talks about her own Bloody Mary experience and we consider the possible origins of the Bloody Mary urban legend.

Joy has another show Easter egg for us about Toledo, we discuss the effects trauma has on mental health and our own experiences with this, and we have WILDLY differing opinions about the scene where Dean punches out the police officers.

I want to clarify that while it’s unspoken (because we knew this episode was going to be longer and so we needed to be somewhat brief when discussing different topics in this week’s show) 

I just want to make it really clear that it should never matter how a girl dresses or speaks, we should always listen when she speaks out and her pain should never become a cultural joke. 

I also want to note that I hope that everyone can see the parallel that I’m drawing between these unsolved cases, femicide statistics, as well as women listening to true crime in order to feel prepared in this world. We also, often, don’t want cold cases to be unsolved or the names of the women before us to just fade away. They lived and they matter and they deserved more from the world.
