  • Episode 51: S3E5 “Bedtime Stories”

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 5 “Bedtime Stories”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of gruesome murders in a small town that seem to mirror fairy tales.

We discuss how the show has changed what EMF detectors do; how good the little old lady is; and the frog who becomes our MVP of this episode.

We also call out Dean’s casual homophobia (Fairy Tales are for everyone Dean!) and how we think his character has changed at this point because he never used to seem like he had such fragile masculinity until recently, and Joy has a theory about why this might be.

There’s also lots of discussion about Fairy Tales and their links to folklore and horror movies.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about how the Led Zeppelin pseudonyms the boys use in this episode actually link to the fairytale theme of the episode; the Pagan roots behind the Grimm’s Fairy Tales, and how they have changed over time; and how storytelling is especially important to women’s safety, and links to the true crime community.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

  • Episode 50: S3E4 “Sin City”

It’s our podcast anniversary! We can’t believe we have been doing this for 1 year already!

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 4 “Sin City”. Sam and Dean investigate a rise in violence and suicides in a small town, where demons have been influencing the residents; while Bobby and Ruby fix the Colt.

We discuss how this is our least favourite episode of season 3 so far, mainly because of the objectification of women in the script, and the general ick factor, but also because of the recurring demon dust; and we decide that we would have loved to see a whole episode of Ruby helping Bobby fix the Colt, rather than this one.

We also discuss how Dean is really not ok when he refuses to eat; and what happens to someone when they die and are resurrected, like both of our main characters have now, because what is happening to Sam?

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Elizabeth Town, Ohio and a haunted bar there; and also some information about different politicians who are dragged in this episode including Tony Perkins and Dick Cheney.

  • Episode 49: S3E3 “Bad Day At Black Rock”

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 3 “Bad Day At Black Rock”. A cursed rabbit’s foot caused mayhem, and Sam and Dean have to track it down before it causes Sam’s death.

We discuss Gordon’s motives for wanting Sam dead, and where he’s getting his information from; the happy childhood memories Sam and Dean have of playing soccer and making guns [side eye at John]; and all of the hilarious slapstick moments in this episode, it’s great!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about curse boxes and the use of boxes in magic; and real rabbit foot lore, its origins, and its links to witches.

  • Episode 48: S3E2 “The Kids Are Alright”

TRIGGER WARNING for violence against women. If you don’t want to listen to that part skip Joy’s Easter egg which starts at 58:20 and ends at 1:23:17

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 2 “The Kids Are Alright”.  Sam and Dean investigate a town where Changelings have replaced many of the children; and Dean reconnects with a woman he had a fling with just over 8 years ago, and her 8 year old son!

We discuss how we think Ben is definitely Dean’s son, how the episode points out the horrors of motherhood, and how good Supernatural is at horror-comedy.

We also discuss the strong powerful women on the show so far, whether fae finished making that rocking horse from the start, and Laura has a rant about the “red dirt”.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Changeling and Faery lore and how it matches the lore in the episode; and the case of Bridget Cleary who was accused of being a changeling and killed.

  • Episode 47: S3E1 “The Magnificent Seven”

    Welcome to season 3 Hunters!

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 1 “The Magnificent Seven”. Sam, Dean and Bobby face the Seven Deadly Sins, and meet a mysterious blonde woman with a mysterious knife that can kill demons.

We discuss our thoughts about Isaac, and what the hunters in general think about Sam and Dean. Why do they blame them for opening the gate to Hell?? Laura has a super disgusting fun fact, and Joy compares each of the characters to their deadly sin counterpart.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about why the locations for this episode (Oak Park, Illinois and Lincoln, Nebraska) may have been chosen; and the real story behind Bensfield’s classification of demons, and how that led to the Persecutions of Trier and the origin of the Seven Deadly Sins.

  • Episode 46: The Road So Far…Season 2 Wrap Up

This week we are wrapping up Season 2 by talking about our highlights of the season, both of the show and the podcast. Think of this as our special features episode, and we will also have a bloopers episode out for you later today!

On this episode we discuss our meetups in person, including our tour of a haunted pub that Sam and Dean would definitely investigate if they visited the UK (listen to hear the EVP we captured!), our visit to an Arboretum, our matching plant babies, and potential merchandise for the podcast.

Our prank wars continue with Joy scaring Laura with ventriloquist dummies, and we reminisce about our favourite moments of recording this season, and our favourite fun facts of season 2.

To finish we play some end of season games, and Joy shouts out some of our listeners to thank you all for your support!

  • Episode 45: S2E22 “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2”

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 22 “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2”. Dean sells his soul to the crossroad demon to save Sam’s life, and the Yellow Eyed Demon opens a gate to Hell.

We discuss the origins of Azazel’s name, and how much we love him and his banter, even though he’s the bad guy.

We also discuss some production issues that happened during the making of this episode, including having to move the cemetery set to a sound stage, and scheduling conflicts for Jeffery Dean Morgan’s scene.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about real life gates to Hell, including Darvaza Gas Crater, Cape Matapan Caves, Hekla Volcano, and Stull Cemetery.

  • Episode 44: S2E21 “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 1”

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 21 “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 1”. Sam disappears and finds himself in an abandoned town with 4 of the other psychic children.

We discuss how no one stays dead on Supernatural; being annoyed that they made Ava evil in this episode; and why Bobby had a map with nothing on it!

We also discuss whether Jensen looks at all like David Hasselhoff, how Sam is like Ebenezer Scrooge at one point in this episode, and how we both think the Yellow Eyed Demon is hot!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Dudley Town (again), the most haunted town in America, the association between Demons and sulphur, and Laura has some spooky haunted town stories from Deadwood South Dakota.

  • Episode 43: S2E20 “What Is And What Should Never Be”

*DISCLAIMER* Laura had audio issues this week. It will be fixed next week.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 20“What Is And What Should Never Be”. Dean encounters a Djinn who sends him into a dream world where Mary is still alive.

We discuss the dream world that has been created for this episode, Dean’s life if Mary had lived, what we think John’s middle name is, and how our listeners don’t know which of us is which.

We also discuss behind the scenes facts about the tattoo make-up for the Djinn, and what Kripke thought about Jensen’s performance in this episode.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the origins of Djinn; and behind the scenes information about the episode from Kripke, who directed it.
