The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 3 episode 15 “Time Is On My Side”. Sam and Dean investigate a case where an immortal doctor is harvesting people’s organs to keep himself alive. We also find out Bela’s backstory.

We discuss Bela as a character and how we think the show did her wrong; why chloroform works on an immortal doctor; and Laura does not like the eyeball horror in this episode!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the legend behind Doc Benton, and the links to Dartmouth College and Mount Moosilauke; some supernatural stories from the location Erie, Pennsylvania; and she reads a reddit thread that sums up her feelings about Bela and her exit from the show.

Stay safe out there, have each other’s backs, and always keep fighting!

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 3 episode 14 “Long Distance Call”. Sam and Dean investigate cases where people receive phone calls from deceased loved ones, and Dean gets a call from someone claiming to be their dad, who says he can get Dean out of his deal with the crossroads demon.

Laura didn’t really like this episode and we discuss why; and Joy doesn’t like how Dean is being written at the moment.

We also discuss why Dean believes John is calling him at the same time as investigating other passed loved ones communicating with family members, is it just wishful thinking?; and we reminisce about landline phones.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Thomas Edison, his possible link to the disappearance and death of Louis Le Prince, and how he really did try to invent the spirit phone; how people thought that telephones were evil when they first came out; the fetishisation of Asian women in the show and other media and how that causes real harm to them; and what she found out about the real Crocotta.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 13 “Ghostfacers”. Ed and Harry are back and they are filming a ghost hunting show in a haunted house. Sam and Dean turn up to also investigate the house and they all have to work together when one of the Ghostfacers team goes missing and they all get trapped.

We discuss how Ghost Adventures could have (allegedly) gotten inspiration from this episode; what we think about the “Ghostfacers”; and whether Sam’s psychic powers are back?

Joy also points out that so far any gay character on the show has been killed off, almost immediately; and we discuss how traumatic and scary Corbett’s death is, and how it’s good that this episode is also funny because otherwise it would be too much. We then have very differing opinions about the ending of the episode.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Houdini, who is from the location of this episode, and haunts his own bust in the museum there; and leap year lore and superstitions.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 12 “Jus in Bello”. Sam and Dean are arrested, but are then forced to work with Agent Henriksen when the police station they are being held in is besieged by demons.

We discuss the new big bad demon Lilith and her origins on the show; what we think about Henrikson in this episode; whose idea it was to record the exorcism on tape and save everyone (Joy thinks Dean, Laura isn’t so sure); and Joy has some views about the writing of this episode.

We also discuss Sam’s out of character behaviour; Dean’s lack of a sense of danger; how we both would have said the “but you didn’t shoot the Deputy” line, in the same situation; and how the anti-possession tattoos are never explained. Seriously, when did they get them, and why did we not get to see that!?

Joy’s Easter eggs are about a “Satanic house” in the episode location (Monument, Colorado), and reads the review of Supernatural by Bruce Campbell that we have made reference to before on this podcast, because it links to the Evil Dead vibes of this episode.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 11 “Mystery Spot”.

We discuss how hot, and unhinged, Sam is in this episode! Joy explains the special effect used for the bullet wound Sam suffers, and she also has a rant about the British weather.

We also discuss our different views about this episode because Joy finds it really difficult to see Dean die over and over again, whereas Laura found this episode highly amusing, at least the first half of it anyway; what the Trickster is doing in this episode; and how sad Sam is for the entire episode especially at the end when he decides not to tell Dean any of what happened.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about; the Oregon Vortex, other real mystery spots, and mysteries in general such as The Taos Hum, and The Expanding Universe Theory.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 10 “Dream a Little Dream of Me”. Sam and Dean have to rescue Bobby from a dream world, and Dean has to confront his deepest fears and insecurities.

Joy starts the episode with a personal ghost story, and Laura requests dream stories from our listeners because she loves them! We then ponder the motel decor theme, why is it birds? And also question if Sam is psychic again?

We also discuss Bobby’s tragic backstory; the cuteness of Dean and Bobby’s father-son dynamic; and analyse the scene where Dean confronts himself.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about people using African dream root to lucid dream; and a deep dive into Tim Leary and the controversial things he got up to, including encouraging his students to get high, a prison break, and a link to Charles Manson!

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 9 “Malleus Maleficarum”.  Sam and Dean investigate a series of mysterious deaths in a small town, which leads them to a group of housewives practicing witchcraft under the guise of a book club.

We discuss our feelings about how witches are portrayed on the show; the, probably unintentional, sexism and misogyny in this episode, and why the patriarchy is threatened by witches and pagans in general.

We also discuss how good the gore is in this episode, although we both could have done without the teeth falling out scene; why Ruby is such an interesting character; and how Laura’s car is haunted.

Joy’s Easter egg is about the location of Sturbridge, Massachusetts and its real links to the Salem Witch Trials,

including the story of Rebecca Nurse.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 8 “A Very Supernatural Christmas”. Sam and Dean come face to face with pagan gods who are sacrificing humans around Christmas time.

We discuss how, yet again, John is the worst Dad by leaving young Sam and Dean to fend for themselves at Christmas; how much we love awkward Sam; and how Dean is such a himbo, and we love him for that.

We also discuss how well the Pagan Gods blend into suburbia, like a 50’s sitcom; how some of the lore around the pine trees being used to kill the Gods don’t really fit from a witchcraft perspective, however it does fit the plot of a Christmas episode; and how cute the necklace origin story is!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about some of the plants mentioned for the Pagan rituals, including meadowsweet; and the origins of Jared Padalecki’s Always Keep Fighting campaign during the filming of this episode, which makes both of us cry!

This week Joy and Laura are discussing season 3 episode 7 “Fresh Blood”, with our guests Steph and Kara from the Buffy rewatch podcast Prophecy Girls.

In this episode Gordon escapes from prison to hunt The Winchesters down, but gets turned into a vampire!

We discuss the crossover cast members from both shows, as well as other links between the two shows, such as the differences between the Buffy vampires and Supernatural vampires.

We also discuss how Dean looks for indications of Sam possibly turning evil; how well the show depicts what it must feel like turning into a vampire, and how scary Gordon is as a vampire; how Dean threatening Bela’s life is probably foreplay; and Joy gets frustrated that she can’t talk about spoilers.

We also spend far too long discussing Jensen’s levels of hotness over the years, and Steph makes the case that Jensen should have been cast as Connor on Angel.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 3 episode 6 “Red Sky At Morning”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of mysterious drownings with links to a ghost ship.

We discuss how this episode hasn’t aged well, especially the scenes with the older lady basically being a sexual predator; but also the bits we loved about this episode.

We also discuss how no one insults Baby and lives; how this episode has season 1 vibes; and the heist scenes where Sam isn’t having a fun time, but Bella and Dean are playing Catwoman and Batman if they were in Ocean’s 11.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the folklore surrounding ghost ships, and then the ‘Death Ship of the Platte River’ in Wyoming specifically, as well as how it relates to this episode; and she also tells us what a Hand of Glory is, and how it is used.
