The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

This week Joy and Laura discuss season 2 episode 19 “Folsom Prison Blues”. Sam and Dean get arrested so they can investigate a series of murders inside a prison.

We talk about our dislike for Henriksen; the tension building in this episode; and how good the plot twists were.

We also discuss behind the scenes information from this episode, including lots about Clif, the bodyguard, playing Tiny; and Laura has a few flags for the episode.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about Clif Kosterman, Jared and Jensen’s bodyguard; hauntings at Alcatraz, including a man who was strangled while in solitary confinement; and paranormal experiences witnessed by real corrections officers.

Laura has so many fun behind the scenes facts for this episode, and Joy gives us a fun fact about the Supernatural set being haunted, and some tea about another actor who was once offered a role on the show.

We also discuss Dean’s love of food, and how he fits in so well on the film set.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the set of the movie Poltergeist, and how real human remains were in fact used during filming. She also talks about some other cursed movies, and has some other fun facts.

This week Joy and Laura discuss season 2 episode 17 “Heart”.  Sam and Dean meet a werewolf!

We consider power dynamics in the workplace, and how Madison deserved a better ending.

We also discuss “pillar of the community Glen” and how we noticed red flags right from the start, and also how hot Sam is this entire episode!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about werewolves and their origins, including whether the part of the mythos about them eating the hearts of their victims is true, which links to Greek Mythology and King Lycaon.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 16 “Roadkill”. Sam and Dean hunt a ghostly murderer, who is haunting a stretch of highway, and protect a woman called Molly, who doesn’t realise she is also a ghost.

We spend a good portion of the preamble discussing Jared’s hair by season. Then we talk about the actual episode and how the crash was totally David’s fault, and how we would both hold a grudge about that and probably also become restless spirits. We also discuss how Dean really isn’t a people person, like at all!

Joy’s Easter egg is about phantom hitchhikers. We discuss the similarities to this episode and then talk about other examples we have heard about.

This week Joy and Laura are discussing season 2 episode 15 “Tall Tales”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of strange happenings on a college campus, and meet the Trickster for the first time.

We discuss how funny this episode is, particularly the scenes from each of the brother’s points of view. It’s hilarious!

Laura also learns the rules of a new game Joy has made up, and we briefly reminisce about MySpace.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the real Crawford Hall, at Ohio University, and how it links to this episode, and then some other ghostly happenings from the university campus too.

This week Joy and Laura are discussing season 2 episode 14 “Born Under a Bad Sign”. Sam is possessed by a demon and Dean has to save him.

Laura does not like seeing Sam acting evil, especially in the scene with Jo, and we discuss how uncomfortable this scene is.

We also discuss why Sam has Ava’s car, whether Sam had any control at all while he was possessed, and how you know it’s a bad situation when Dean is the one panicking!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the recent rise in exorcisms in Duluth, Minnesota, the different categories of demon possession, and she also tells us a selection of possession stories, including the story that became the basis for “The Exorcist”.

This week Joy and Laura talk about season 2 episode 13 “Houses of the Holy”. Sam and Dean investigate when people start killing and saying an angel told them to do it. Was it really an angel or just a vengeful spirit?

We consider the reasons why Dean doesn’t believe in angels but does believe in demons, and how this belief is wrapped up in the trauma of losing his mum, and we discuss Jensen’s stunt driving.

We also discuss/argue about whether two wrongs make a right, and if Dean threatened to kill Sam during this episode!

Joy’s Easter eggs are real accounts of people who think they were saved by angels, including a personal story from her own family. This then prompts a discussion about how to listen to your own intuition, especially if you have anxiety.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 12 “Nightshifter”. Sam and Dean investigate a string of robberies at banks and jewellery stores, and encounter another shapeshifter.

We discuss our thoughts about Ron and how clueless he is, the FBI agent who is a wish version of Fox Mulder, and the similarities between this episode and previous episodes, “Skin” and “The Usual Suspects”.

We also consider the beer themed motel room, what stunt women had to go through back in the 2000’s and earlier, and the fantastic badass ending to this episode!

Joy’s Easter eggs are about silver and the lore that surrounds it as a repellent for evil, and Peter Stumpf, the Werewolf of Bedburg.

This week Joy and Laura are talking about season 2 episode 11 “Playthings”. Sam and Dean investigate a hotel that is being haunted by the spirit of a little girl who died there.

We discuss Dean’s love of “sissy British accents”, all the creepy AF dolls, and all the Stephen King references in this episode -and there were a lot!

We also consider why this show appears to be obsessed with Hoodoo, how the ghost in this episode actually operates, and why the Winchesters can’t even smash glass when they are trying to rescue Tyler in the pool house. Seriously! Was it bullet proof glass or something??

Joy’s Easter egg is about the Stanley Hotel that inspired The Shining, because of all the Stephen King references in this episode.
