This week on Zen Perry Project, Zen is joined at the Bushwick Basement by Kate Brunotts, an introspective musical artist and producer best known for her impressive repertoire of emotionally rich ethereal synth-pop. In this charming conversation, Kate describes the obstacles she overcame leaving home and establishing herself as a young adult in New York City, discusses the importance of remembering that the internet is a space where we are connecting to human to human, considers how she keeps herself inspired to create art that is meaningful to herself, all while passionately professing her love for dogs.

This week on Zen Perry Project, Zen lights up with Pat Harrington - guitarist, vocalist, and leader of stoner metal trio GEEZER. Pat discusses the band's aspirations to push the limits of the blues, the magic of the California desert after the band's recent performance at Heavy Psych Sounds Fest, how he's not the one in the band with a "pedal problem" (having 10 fuzz pedals is normal, right??), and how his musical passion has been paramount to being a great Father.

Catch GEEZER on tour - they're playing Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on Sunday 4/30 with Wizard Rifle and Bongzilla; they're also touring several Canadian cities in early May!

Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Trevor J, a prolific and well-regarded film photographer.

During Trevor J's visit to New York City, he stayed with Jake Take and me in our Bushwick apartment, and we spent some time shooting film and talking about life in the streets. Trevor J was in town for New York City NFT week, where he sells his NFTs on his website, trevorjphoto.com. We discussed his many passions, including beat-based music under the name Trevor J, where he has released around 26 albums.

Trevor J shared with us how music was his first artistic creation, and his first album happened to be a suicide note. However, once he found out that these songs resonated with a younger generation and gave them a sense of belonging and hope, he decided to connect with others, kept his music going, and stayed creative for his fans and artistic expression.

Aside from music, Trevor J is also huge in the graffiti community. He constantly travels around with spray paint and markers, finding dope places to throw his art around. We talked about the power of graffiti as a form of self-expression and the importance of leaving your mark on the world.

During our conversation, we also dove deep into Trevor J's love for film photography. He shared with us how film photography has taught him to appreciate the little things, to slow down and be more intentional with his shots. His photos capture the raw beauty of the streets, the people, and the culture that make up the city.

Trevor J is a true artist, with a passion for self-expression and a talent for capturing the essence of life through his lens. Join us on the Zen Perry Project as we explore the art of living and the art of photography with Trevor J.

This week on Zen Perry Project, Zen sits down with Duane Betts for one of the prolific singer-songwriter-guitarist's most extensive interviews to date!

An adept musician even at a young age, Duane cut his teeth as a teen regularly sitting-in with his father Dickey in The Allman Brothers Band. After moving to Southern California and leading rock outfits Backbone69 and Whitestarr, Betts spent nearly a decade playing guitar alongside his father in the group Great Southern.  Duane also performed as a touring guitarist for folk-rockers Dawes and was a member of the supergroup Jamtown with G. Love, Donovan Frankenreiter, and Cisco Adler.

In 2018, Betts released his debut album, Sketches of American Music, and toured as a guest of the Devon Allman Project.  At year’s end, Duane and Devon formed The Allman Betts Band along with Berry D. Oakley, son of the late Allman Brothers Band founding bassist Berry Oakley.  The group issued two albums- 2019’s Down to the River and 2020’s Bless Your Heart- before announcing a hiatus in 2022.

Betts reflects not only on his upbringing amongst rock and roll royalty and how his extensive experiences have shaped the artist he is today - but delves into his recording process (his second solo album is set for release this summer!), reminisces about his musical inspirations, and looks forward to how he aims to proudly carry his family's legacy into the future.

During a captivating conversation with Shane Trimble, the mastermind behind High Reeper, I had the pleasure of delving into the band's inception and their serendipitous discovery of a music scene that flawlessly complemented their debut album. It was fascinating to learn how what initially began as a studio project quickly evolved into a magnetic live act that demands to be experienced in person. With their unique sound and infectious energy, High Reeper's undeniable talent caught the attention of a record label and launched them into a whirlwind of touring and success.

Every creator has traversed their own wicked and winding road through life. On the Zen Perry Project I interview artists to tease out knowledge, wisdom and warnings from their journeys to feast your eyes and ears upon.

A show to put some gas in your tank to create the life you want. Artists, musicians, designers and more. Weekly, wherever you get your podcasts.

Zen chats with guitarist / vocalist Kyle Edissi, guitarist Jonah Kay, and bassist Steve Rowlands of the Melodic Thrash Metal band Invicta.

Hailing from Kitchener, Ontario, the Canadian thrashers discuss the development and gear used for recording their second full-length album, Triumph and Torment, set for release in March. Inspired by the unleashed storytelling potential of comic books, the band discusses how they write songs to feel like soundtracks to otherworldly realms - which they credit as guiding them to their niche in the real-world metal scene.  So far the results have been fantastic; the band share the unconventional story of how they managed to first meet Heathen - and how the mutually beneficial relationship with the legendary Bay Area thrashers has blossomed into next month's upcoming East Coast tour.

Gathered to rehearse for several upcoming East Coast shows and a European tour this summer, Zen comes toe to toe (or more precisely couch to couch) with the iconic Stoner / Doom Metal outfit, THE OBSESSED.

As a staple of the underground metal scene for decades, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has more than a few memories to share about his impressive career - from his renowned stints with Saint Vitus to his all-star collaboration with Lemmy & Dave Grohl on the latter's heavy metal side project, Probot - he's a busy guy who's bumped into a lot of interesting shoulders . With an especially rich catalog of music spanning his career, it's a treat to hear Wino's enthusiasm to be performing his Obsessed material with the contemporary line-up including the talented Brian Constantino, Chris Angleberger, & Jason Taylor.

In addition to sharing their individual impressions and stories about Wino, the band talks about the touring life, breaks down the unique custom and vintage gear comprising their colossal rigs, and shares recommendations of their personal favorite bands in the business now.

Fresh off a trip planning his move to NYC, Zen enjoys sharing a drink with an exceptionally well-traveled artist, Permanent Mark. Having explored the globe to earn his coveted mark of traditional tattoo masters, Zen weaves through stories involving Mark's Spike TV show, the ownership of a bar in Spain, life on film sets, and ultimately Mark's current work fashioning hand made rugs. He might not know a fancy word for rugmaker*, but if you'd lived a life like his, would you need to?

Mark sells his art on Instagram, check him out!

*Is there even a fancy word for rugmaker - if you know - tell us!

"I am passionate about drawing associations across these fields that I love, and cultivating a holistic life path. I hope to grow away from the pressure to compartmentalize these pursuits, to place them in defined boxes or identities. Recently, I have found compelling links across these interests, manifesting in areas such as acoustic ecology, data journalism and sonification, album artwork, the union of nature field recordings and music… the list goes on. (Sound, and art, and data — oh, my!) I am keen on continuing these explorations, and aspire to work and grow as a freelance artist, data scientist / researcher, and musician." -Aura
