Odds and Ends: Out of nowhere, I guess we’re talking about Scott Stapp and the genetics of Woody Allen’s kids; T.J. highly recommends the Alex Garland show Devs, and Nick wants to believe again (but maybe not as much as before) as he talks about diving back into the X-Files.

Feature Film: Returning champ Jimmy Stewart creeps back into our show in Alfred HItchcock’s Vertigo, an influentially iconic (great?) film from yesteryear. Some of us think this movie looks pretty, some of us don’t. Some of us think this movie is alright, some of us don’t. Glad that after 48 episodes, these descriptions haven’t gotten any less riveting.

Odds and Ends:  James Corden is leaving TV, and the world rejoices, but we need to get the heat off ourselves after triggering his fans… get it, T.J.? Heat? Do you get it? Travis watched a couple shows, including Old Enough, which he says is the (second) best Netflix show ever, and the title isn’t weird, you’re just nasty. Nick talks about the new Alan Resnick short film, and T.J. saw the new Doctor Strange movie, and both agree that they are movies. 

Feature Film: We’re talking about the highly influential Heat, directed by Michael Mann, though we’re not sure what makes it so influential. Aren’t you glad you’re also on the podcast to tell us? It stars Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, two acting greats. Or maybe just acting icons. Or are those the same thing? Are they? No seriously, what’s the difference? Anyway, it’s long, and there’s a lot of characters, but we mostly just care about Al Pacino’s cocaine-addled performance. Coke king.

Odds and Ends: We’re sitting in our cars and eating bars and eating stars… and also making fun of bad old rap, but who are we to judge? Have you heard T.J.’s freestyles? Nope, because he can’t, so tell him to shut up. T.J. reviews Our Flag Means Death, and Travis covers The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, and only one of those is a Netflix show. Good for us. We also dip back into High and Low so Travis can give his take. T.J. revokes Moose’s influence and declares his intent to go back to decimal ratings.

Feature Film: It’s a graveyard smash as we discuss the low-budget horror classic, Phantasm. A charming oddity of dreamlike horror, which is fitting since T.J. and Travis both watched this in a half-awake trance. Featuring ponytail Biden, super soaker blood balls, 70s disco titties, and a shot or two and a musical theme that we may or may not have stolen to use in our own low-budget horror movie, get your Phantasm today!

Feature Film: It’s Kurosawa time again as we discuss another contemporary of his (we’ll get to a samurai flick one of these days), the thriller “High and Low.” It follows National Shoe president wannabe Kingo Gondo as he gets wrapped up in the kidnapping of his chauffeur's son, where he is asked to foot the ransom bill. Then it’s not really about him, then it kind of is again. This movie is pretty twisty. And did we mention the blocking? Charli asks what our (not Sega) dream cast and nightmare cast would be for the inevitable American remake.

Odds and Ends: Trying to catch up with Better Call Saul before it ends; all gangster movie actors are in The Sopranos, and they are all the Mega Italian; we unintentionally dive into another director’s (this time, Martin Scorsese) filmography as we tend to do during our post-chats; we’re anxiously anticipating Men, not men, but Men… we’re men who want to see Men; we also talk about the Oscars, but somehow manage to avoid talking about THAT.

Feature Film: We’re talking David Fincher’s “Zodiac,” which tells the real-life story of the titular serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco bay area throughout the 60s and 70s, which just so happens to be T.J.’s favorite movie of all time*. We speculate who the Zodiac really is, which based on Travis’ rulings, could literally be anyone for any reason. We spend a good chunk of this discussion talking about the real life story instead of the movie, because it’s a crazy story, and also we don’t have much to say about the movie other than “it’s really good.”

Feature Film: We’re talking the ultra low-budget low-key sci-fi talky movie “The Man from Earth,” written by classic sci-fi icon Jerome Bixby. A simple bottle movie about a guy telling his friends he’s a multi-millenia old being, which they react to by… talking about it, for the whole thing. Venturing into many different philosophical alleyways and theoretical roundabouts, it’s a simple but heady trip into a world of what ifs, some… more ridiculous than others. Though if everyone had thought ahead and used their Jump to Conclusions mats, they could’ve avoided all this nonsense.
