  • 042: Culture lessons - Do you have a robust recruiting process to know when ‘maybe’ means ‘no’ & only hire fellow zealots?

This solo episode explores item #13 on the 'Culture is everything' checklist: Do you have a robust recruiting process to know when 'maybe' means no, so you only hire fellow zealots?

Recruitment is a critical step in building a strong team. While there is no magic recruiting solution, I’ll share my learnings and recommendations from my 15 years of experience growing a team from 1 to 150.

The key is to use a multi-person and multi-step selection process to avoid hiring culture ‘polluters’.

  • 040: Culture lessons - Is your culture reinforced with a short, specific story of a core value being lived at every daily huddle?

This solo episode explores item #11 on the ‘Culture is everything’ checklist: Is your culture reinforced with a short specific story of a core value being lived at every daily huddle?

Sharing stories of team members living the core values brings everyone together and helps the team live your core purpose. The aim is to find specific, short stories that directly link to your core purpose. Share this with the team by specifying how the core value is being lived, and by whom.

Sharing core values stories is a simple way to catch people doing something right and reinforce the unique language of your growing team

  • 036: Xavier Duursma - Professional footballer

In this episode we have the unique opportunity to learn from an emerging leader in the early stages of their leadership journey.

Xavier Duursma is a professional footballer in the Australian Football League (AFL), arguably Australia's most elite sporting competition.

In late 2018 Xavier left home in Foster (a small Victorian town of about 1,000 people) to move interstate and join the big time as a professional athlete.

In the interview, Xavier shares his learnings of going from a senior leader at his junior club to being one of the most junior members of his AFL team, and how he was able to lead in his own authentic way despite not being one of the appointed leaders of the team.

Xavier also shares his learning on how to stay focussed and accept the ever-changing parts of his workplace that he can't control.

A painted picture vision is a short inspiring document that describes what your business will look, feel and act like at a certain point of time (I prefer 3 years).
