  • TOTLB S98 Josh Malerman

We’re back with another awesome interview episode!! And what a HUGE story teller do we have in store for you now!! We’re coming at you with the author of the New York Times best seller, Bird Box, which was his DEBUT novel, Josh Malerman!! He’s back at it with Goblin, a novel in six novellas!

“Goblin seems like any other ordinary small town. But with the master storyteller Josh Malerman as your tour guide, you’ll discover the secrets that hide behind its closed doors. These six novellas tell the story of a place where the rain is always falling, nighttime is always near, and your darkest fears and desires await. Welcome to Goblin. . . .”

Speaking with Josh, you can just tell that not only is he excited about this book, but he’s excited about his whole career. His excitement and his goals stretch beyond what is happening right now at this point, and are infectious! He tells us how the town in the book got it’s name, and about the time that Michael Crichton gave Bird Box his stamp of approval! If you haven’t picked up a book in a while, Josh has a variety of horror pleasure for you, and if you aren’t that big of a reader, do yourself a favor and pick up the audio book. I promise that you’re going to find something that you fall in love with!

  • TOTLB 311 Return To Oz

It’s time, to go back in time! The story of this next pop culture classic, seems to be a little bit of a bumpy road! We’re going back thirty five years, to 1985!! Now, some say that this IS a sequel, some say that it’s an unofficial sequel, but either way, it DOES follow the time after the Wizard of Oz. We are, of course, talking about Return To Oz!

In 1954, Disney buys the rights to the rest of the Oz movies, from Baum, the author. In 1980, it was suggested that another film be made, as Disney would be losing the rights to the film soon thereafter. Because of the rush, the schedule fell behind, and the movie performed poorly once it was released. Return to Oz is the story of Dorothy, after her time in Oz. At this point in time, the Scarecrow is missing, with his kingdom in shambles. The whole populous of Oz has been turned to stone, or has been lost to the desert. Upon the re-watch, I think we all agreed that it was actually a very watchable movie, so make sure you go back and give it a chance!

  • TOTLB 310 Jupiter’s Legacy

Our next subject can be a little heavy at times, and a little slower at times. It has those times where we’re really rooting for the good guys, and times where we really think the good guys are pieces of crap! This is the story of a family who has gone through a VERY rough time in their lives, with their business going down in shambles, and the suicide death of their father. We are of course talking about the hit Netflix series, Jupiter’s Legacy which spawned from the comic book of the same name!

When we first meet this family, we meet them as tried and true superheroes, who are going after bad guys. But the more and more that you peel back the layers, through the use of the flashbacks, we realize that they WERE once a group of really good people, but the world that they live in, has changed so much, that they aren’t really sure if they’re on the same side of the change, as they used to be. It’s a very similar tale as always. Do the good guys stay good, and refuse to kill anybody, or do they move along with the times, and do what they need to do in order to ensure the safety of their family and friends?

We are BACK at it, with another awesome interview episode! If you’re looking for a an interviewee with a some giant brains, Andy is definitely going to be someone you want to listen to!! We are talking to Andy Weir about his novel, Project Hail Mary, which you can buy right now!

“The only hope for humanity rests with Dr. Ryland Grace — if only he could remember his mission. Andy Weir, the bestselling author of The Martian, delivers another perfect science-based thriller with Project Hail Mary, a tale of impending catastrophe, survival and interstellar adventure.”

If the past is ANY indication of the awesome content that Andy writes, Project Hail Mary is guaranteed to be a success! It’s coming from the mind of the creator of the hit book, later adapted to a movie, The Martian! We spoke to Andy, not only about Project Hail Mary, but also about The Martian, and of course, about space itself! Make sure that you give the interview a listen, and then to check out Project Hail Mary, it doesn’t disappoint!

  • TOTLB 308 Mortal Kombat 2021

Here we are the end of our Mortal Kombat triathlon! So far we have taken a deep dive into the old favorites. We spoke about the original 1995, Mortal Kombat, that brought us the most familiar aspects of one of our favorite video games! Then we spoke about the sequel, Annihilation, which was supposed to move us beyond the tournament, into earths mightiest heroes, defending the earth realm, against the forces of Outworld. This was supposed to expand the horizons into more characters that we love, and a more respectful view of the martial arts, but I think overall, it was looked at, as a big step backwards.

BUT, here we are, more than twenty five years later, talking about another version of this loveable video game. It was back to the drawing board, with Mortal Kombat, being a reboot, but still keeping us in this awesome world that we love so much! Familiar faces are back, with a bit more backstory on Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Plus, we get a whole new character that has never been featured in the video games, a funny Kano, and more, but smaller bits of Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and more!! So far the reviews, from the non critics, are really good. There are already talks about a sequel!

  • TOTLB 307 Mortal Kombat Annihilation

Keeping on brand with our Mortal Kombat theme, it’s time to jump two years forward, from the original! There are many people that think this movie was a big step backwards from the original. For me personally, it holds a weird special place in my heart, though I know that it wasn’t the greatest movie, or the better sequel. But it introduces many new characters, that we all loved from the video games, and the ones that we had hoped would be in the original!

We are of course talking about Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Annihilation introduces us to the emperor, who is the main villain of the story, up until now, Shao Kahn. His group of villains, along with his father, plan to usurp the tournament, and take over the Earth realm. You’ll remember Liu Kang, Kitana, Raiden, Sonya Blade, and introduced to Smoke, Ermac, Sindel, Motaro, Sheeva, and more!! The producers plan for this movie was “more,”” more of everything, including fights, CGI, and characters. Give it a watch, and let us know if you think this goal was achieved!

  • TOTLB 306 Mortal Kombat

MORTAL KOMBAT! We are going back to 1995 in order to speak about the very first Mortal Kombat movie that came out!! With the release of the third in the series, the reboot, we decided that now was the time to create and all Mortal Kombat set of sessions!!

Mortal Kombat, of course, stems from the video game series of the same name!! This game has spawned VERY popular titles, with many popular characters such as Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Raiden, and so much more! I mean, wat better thing than God’s, humans, and beings with super powers? The first, of three movies, essentially is the story behind the first and second games, picking a little bit from both. Liu Kang is the chosen one, to defeat Shang Tsung. But before they can get to Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang essentially has to find himself. A part of finding himself, is finding, and getting to know an unlikely pair of friends, in Sonya and Johnny Cage! The trio, with a few other people helping, have to find themselves, as well as traverse through the players in Mortal Kombat!

  • TOTLB 304 Triple Threat Documentaries

This episode is a little different, and quirky than we are normally accustomed too. Tim had the idea that we do a documentary episode. But instead of just choosing a documentary to talk about, we decided that ALL three of us would choose a documentary to watch, and then talk about. So, this episode technically has three topics within the one episode!

Juan chose to speak about the documentary titled, MLK/FBI. There’s a lot of very cool information about what was going on inside the FBI, during Martin Luther King’s rise to popularity. There is said to be many more recordings that the FBI took of MLK, that will be released later this decade.

Gabe chose to speak about the documentary, Murder Among the Mormons. This film is about a famous forger, who was apparently VERY good at forging items/documents, and created a lot of forgeries that had to do with believers in the Latter-day Saints movement.

If you’re a fan of youtube “celebrities,” than you might end up liking Doyle’s pick. He chose to speak about the Jake Paul documentary titled, The Mind of Jake Paul. The documentary was created by another youtuber, and explores the mind of Jake Paul, as well as the psychology of youtubers, in general.

Tim went a little deeper into something that he seems passionate about, graffiti. He spoke about a graffiti documentary titled, Infamy. Graffiti follows the lives of six different, well known graffiti artists, as well as one buffer. A buffer is someone who cleans up graffiti. Take a look back onto the lives of a different form of artist.
