Thinking Outside The Long Box

I’m not quite sure how to describe our next episode, which is also our pop culture classic! We’re going back to 1985, in order to talk about a tale that is as old as time. You know, the one about a Hawk, and a Wolf? You don’t remember that tale? Well, for this episode, we’re talking about the film, Ladyhawke! 

Ladyhawke is the tale of two lovers who end up being cursed! Due to this curse, the two lovers now have to suffer as different animals, at exactly opposite times, which means that they NEVER get to spend any time together, as humans! Etienne is cursed to be a wolf during the night, and Isabeau is cursed to be a Hawk during the day time. That, plus a little bit of Matthew Broderick thrown in there, for some good measure, and some “comedic” relief every now and then! So of course, this film is all about the team of good guys, trying to figure out how to vanquish the bad guys, and life the curse all at the same time! Will the lovers ever be able to spend time together as human beings?

There aren’t that many (per capita) shows that are created from comic books. Of those, we do our best to try and speak about as many of the as we can, when they hit live. THIS is one of those topics, that we were pretty excited about getting into? Robert Kirkman, obviously super popular because of his Walking Dead comic book, but also because of the role that he has played in the Walking Dead TV show, is also the creator of today’s topic! We are, of course, speaking about the series, Invincible.

Steven Yeun, of Walking Dead fame, steps into the titular role, in order to play Mark Grayson/Invincible! PLUS the incredible JK Simmons steps in to play the second major role as, Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man. This series, tells the story of Invincible, really coming into being, and into his own. Mark doesn’t think that he’s ever going to get any super powers, because of his father having married a normal human without super powers. But, when they finally arrive, how does Mark deal with everything? How does he deal with trying to save the world, and trying to have a girlfriend? OR, the possibility of a girlfriend on his team? Give it a watch!

Have you ever wondered how we, as a society, know as much as we do, about how bodies decompose? How do we know what bodies will do, once they’re subject to different conditions? Well, you need to do a little bit more research about a little something that they call, a body farm. A body farm is literally a location that is full of dead bodies, that are decaying, in different conditions! You feel that little bit of creepy, crawling down your spine? Well, we spoke to two gentleman, who took this concept, and turned it into a horror movie!

We were able to speak with the creators, of this creepy horror movie, Brandon Keenan & Nick LaMantia! These two gentleman, took an already creepy concept, added a prison, and the horror genre too it, and they had a hit on their hands!! They spoke to us about the process of making the movie, where they got the idea from, and where we might go for what we hope, is the sequel! Not too long ago, we all watched the original Justice League movie, and not too long ago, we all pretty much hated it! We thought that the original movie, had pretty much destroyed any possibility of a deeper DCEU future. If they can’t make a team up movie correctly, how well would a connected universe even work? 

BUT, NOW we have the Justice League Snyder Cut!! For those who don’t know, Zack Snyder was originally set to create the first rendition of this movie. A tragic family death, lead Snyder to walk away from the movie, with Joss Whedon being hired to finish the movie. This ended up being almost completely re-shot, and in a complete different direction than Snyder had intended. For this episode we’re talking about the movie that Snyder put together, after fan demand, that was much more what he had originally intended! I think it can be safely said, that THIS is the movie that should have come out originally. It treats each character with much more respect. There were definitely some flaws in the movie, but it’s hard to think that this isn’t at least a colossal step forward.

It’s pop culture classic time, and we are talking something that is very near and dear to Juan’s heart! From when I was a child, I was obsessed with Sam & Al, leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and saddened by the fact that Sam never made it home. Of course, we are talking about the scifi show, Quantum Leap! Quantum Leap is the reason that this show exists at all. Juan started his podcast career, working behind the scenes of The Quantum Leap Podcast, then worked up to editing & being on the show every once in a while, to co-creating this show!

If you don’t know, Quantum Leap is all about genius, Sam Beckett, who invented a way to time travel. The catch is, that he can only travel within his own life time, AND during the first leap (as they weren’t completely ready), some other force “grabbed” onto Sam, and has made it so that he hasn’t been able to make it home. While trying to make it home, with his trusty sidekick by his side, Al, they been righting many wrongs, and changing so many lives for the better!

This episode is a little bit different/special! One of the special things about it, is that THE hosts of The Quantum Leap podcast, were awesome enough, to record a small piece for us, to let us know what Quantum Leap means to them. They give us a little background on each host, and the rundown of the Quantum Leap Podcast! ALSO, Gabe was missing for this show, but AC was able to stop by towards the end of the episode, and tell us what his thoughts were on the show as well! This is a very special episode, and hopefully you’ll take a look back at the show, if you haven’t recently.

We are inching closer and closer to episode 300!! What a crazy milestone that we never thought we were going to get to, six years ago! BUT, here we are, and we are talking about some awesome subjects, as we get closer and closer!! First up, we are officially past the “blip” as it’s called in the MCU. WandaVision was technically the first series, to move on from that, but it took place mostly in it’s own little space, so there wasn’t much advancement forward. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, on the other hand, is beyond the “blip” AND we get to see some of the repercussions, and stories, that have been going on since that time. 

What have Bucky and Falcon been up to since they were both wiped off the face of the planet? What do they have to go through, on their day to day lives, now that the big threat is over? Are there anymore threats? Who is this new Captain America, why is he such a douche, and why didn’t Falcon end up taking over the mantle, like the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, wanted him to? There are tons more questions, and honestly, some answers! THIS show is definitely worth the watch, from the get go. You’re not going to be waiting, and waiting, for THE episode that is going to be good, or the next surprise around the corner!!

What is going on everyone!! You know what time it is!! It’s time for another awesome LIVE edition of the podcast!! Every time that we get together to record, our last episode, is always live, with hopes of interacting with some of our listeners! They’ll throw in their topics, or give live feedback on some of the topics that we are discussing as well. SOMETIMES we’ll even have a listener on the show with us, on video, talking about something specifically!

Not only that, but this time, we even did a small challenge!! I bought what was billed as the “world’s hottest chocolate bar” from Vat19. It was pretty small, with a recommended intake of 1 square, per person. The whole bar consisted of 12 tiny squares, that looked very innocent at the time! Little did most of us know, what kind of pain we were in for! BUT, just like always, we had fun doing crazy stuff!

This sequel was thirty years in the making, and actually was not even really supposed to be made. The only reason that Eddie Murphy decided to make this sequel is because of the demand for it! So, we’re here talking about a movie that took a very long path to get made, and finished the way he liked it. Of course we are talking about the long awaited sequel, Coming 2 America.

Coming 2 America tells the story of King Akeem Joffer, years from where we last saw him, getting married to his lovely bride. NOW, Akeem is the king, not just a prince, and we get a look on how the King has changed, since we last saw him. Changed for the worse, unfortunately. Akeem has lost his way, he just found out he has a son, and his oldest daughter is trying to make her father understand that she is more than capable of wearing his crown after he passes. It’s a fun, and more family orientated movie, than the last time around, which is still fine.

It’s pop culture classic time everyone!! We’re not going back TOO far for this one, just to 1993! A time, where in the movie, for the most part, it’s 2032! Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes are teaming up, or trying to kill each other, in this action movie, Demolition Man!

Come on, when was the last time that you watched Demolition Man? It might not be the most up to date movie in the world, and it might not be the most well acted movie, but it is a LOT of fun! Demolition Man tells the story of a cop who was accused of murder, and has to be put in stasis, with the criminal that he arrested! They’re both brought back in the year 2032, in order to stop each other, and of course, all hell breaks loose!! Make sure that you’re ready for a future filled ONLY with Taco Bell, yet also devoid of anything that is bad for you, including profane language! Also, before you use the lavatory after that Taco Bell, make sure that you’ve read the instructions on how to use those damn shells!
