  • Understanding The Endometriosis Belly, Part 3: SIBO Symptoms

The endometriosis belly, the endometriosis tummy, the endo bloat, the endo belly, the endo pooch - whatever you call it, you know what I’m talking about.

That weird phenomena where your belly suddenly decides to make you look six months pregnant, not only is it uncomfortable, sometimes painful (especially if you have adhesions), it can also affect us emotionally - whether it’s about our self-esteem or because it plays on our fears around fertility.

But what is endometriosis bloating? What causes it, and what can we do about it?

In this series of episodes, I’m going to be diving into all the above and more, and really exploring the role that gut health has in endometriosis.Today I’m talking about SIBO - Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.

SIBO is a very common gut health condition, in fact, research has shown that 60-70% of IBS cases are actually caused by SIBO. To add to that, endometriosis is a risk factor for developing SIBO, so for those of us with endo and even with IBS too, this is a condition we want to be aware of.

    • SIBO is an accumulation of of bacteria and archaea in in the small intestine.

    • SIBO can cause damage to the small intestine and can cause malapsorption, nutrient deficiencies and intolerances.

    • The symptoms of SIBO are bloating, fullness, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, gas, burping, GERD or acid reflux. SIBO can also cause symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, headaches, rashes, swelling and nasal congestion.

    • There are three types of SIBO: hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulfide type SIBO.

    • Hydrogen sulfide type SIBO can also cause additional symptoms such as bladder pain, bladder frequency and urgency, generally feeling unwell, worsening food intolerances, histamine sensitivity, sulfur smelling gas, body pain, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet and worsening symptoms after Epsom salt baths and sulfur containing foods.

    • Hydrogen type SIBO tends to cause diarrhea.

    • Hydrogen sulfide tends to cause diarrhea but can cause constipation.

    • Methane tends to cause constipation.

    • Both hydrogen and methane together can cause constipation or diarrhea, or a mix of both (so sometimes you’re constipated, sometimes you have diarrhea).

    • Methane and hydrogen sulfide together can cause either or both.

    • All three types together can cause either or both.

    • Key signs of SIBO are symptoms, low B12, low ferritin, vitamins A/D/E/K deficiencies, low omega 3 levels, sometimes low albumin; leaky gut symptoms, and conditions such as interstitial cystitis, psoriasis, restless leg syndrome, rosacea, and rheumatoid arthritis.

    • Key causes to look out (there are many, but most relevant to our community) are endometriosis, abdominal surgery (inc. laparoscopy), chronic stress leading to slow gut motility, low stomach acid and low digestive enzymes, food poisoning and hypothyroidism.

If any of the above sounds like you, listen to this episode and be sure to tune into my follow up episode where I talk about SIBO testing and treatment.

A huge thank you to my tutor Dr Allison Siebecker for her SIBO Pro course, which has provided me with the information and training to be able to share this with you today.

  • What Happened on My Low Oxalate and Low Histamine Elimination Diet for Interstital Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome has been dubbed the evil twin of endometriosis, and often goes undiagnosed because the pain from the two in the pelvic can sometimes overlap and blur.

I only realised that the bladder issues I was experiencing weren’t endo related when my endo symptoms resolved after I changed my diet. Over the years, my bladder pain has only worsened and has now evolved to that point where I experience pain pretty much 247.

Histamines and oxalates can sometimes be behind bladder pain, and so this led me down a path of trying an elimination diet under the guidance of a nutrition at the start of this year. I started sharing my story on IG, but as the story unfolded, I decided it would be better to go quiet on the matter and share it once I was on the other side. So finally - I’m ready to talk!

    In today’s episode I discuss -

    • The symptoms I was experiencing which motivated me to seek further help and try an elimination diet.

    • Oxalates and histamines, what they are and which foods I had to avoid on this elimination diet.

    • How I found the elimination diet - what I tried, what worked, what didn’t work.

    • What my symptoms are like now and which ones worsened (yes, really!).

    • The root causes we identified as being the culprits behind my bladder pain.

    • Hydrogen Sulfide type SIBO and bladder pain.

    • Biofilms - what they are and how they’re related to bladder pain.

    • The next steps on my healing journey.

  • Fix Your Period with Nicole Jardim

Guys this episode is SO good! Nicole Jardim is back on the show to talk endometriosis, missing periods, ovulation, thyroid problems and basically all the periods problems you can think of. Her debut book Fix Your Period is out in the world and as someone living with endometriosis and as a endo health coach, I just seriously cannot wait to get stuck into it and use some of her tools and practices with my own healing journey and with my clients.

Nicole and I hopped on to an Instagram Live on Thursday to celebrate the launch of her book in the UK and across the world, and to talk about the key pillars of hormone health that she guides us through in the book.

    We talk about -

    • Why nutrition, gut health, stress management and blood sugar are the foundations of a healthy period.

    • What stress does to our menstrual cycle.

    • How blood sugar dysregulation can affect menopause.

    • Whether endo can cause hair loss - and what else might be behind it.

    • The essential nutrients for thyroid health.

    • What hormonal imbalances often occur in people with endometriosis.

    • How her book, Fix Your Period, can help those of us with endometriosis.

And so much more! This was the funnest conversation, I really love chatting with Nicole and I’m sure you’ll love listening to all her period wisdom. Also - enjoy the moment where I bitch about my mum, only for my aunt to be watching and pipe in!

  • Q + A Episode: Answering Your Questions About How To Manage Endometriosis Naturally

Recently I did an Instagram and Facebook Live endometriosis self-care morning, with meditation, pelvic floor stretches, a gratitude practice, intention setting and a q&a. This Live was all about calming down the brain, so that our pain signals reduce and we have less endometriosis flare ups and less pain in general.

I ended the Live with a Q + A answering your questions about how to get started with managing endometriosis naturally and holistically, and supporting you with areas where you feel stuck.

Lots of you wanted this in podcast form, so here is the final installment of this Live and in today’s episode, I’m answering the following questions and addressing the following blocks some of you are facing with managing endometriosis naturally/holistically:

    • “I want to get started with managing endometriosis but I’m scared of endometriosis spreading if I’m not on the pill.”

    • “My doctor has told me stopping my period is the only way to control endo.”

    • “I just don’t understand how to manage endometriosis holistically.”

    • “Brain fog and sugar cravings always get in the way.”

I share why the pill doesn’t work for everyone and how the pill may be helpful for endometriosis in some cases (but isn’t a cure), which supplements have been shown to actually reduce the growth rate and severity of endometriosis, the strategies I use for managing endometriosis holistically and naturally - from reducing inflammation, healing the gut to supporting our detoxification systems and what methods you can use for reducing chronic fatigue and beating sugar cravings.

  • A Morning Routine For Endometriosis

Recently I did an Instagram and Facebook Live endometriosis self-care morning, with meditation, pelvic floor stretches, a gratitude practice, intention setting and a q&a. This Live was all about calming down the brain, so that our pain signals reduce and we have less endometriosis flare ups and less pain in general.

I felt like it was such an important time to do this, given that we’re currently in a situation where so many of us are experiencing fear, stress and anxiety. When the brain is stressed, it goes on hyper-alert and reacts in an exaggerated way to everything and anything that could be a perceived threat - including our endometriosis. So you may have noticed that recently, your periods are even more painful, or perhaps you’re getting daily pain when you didn’t before. If this is you - think about your stress/fear/anxiety levels, it’s likely they’ve been pretty high of late.

So I took us through a morning routine for endometriosis, one that would help calm our brains down and wrap our minds in safety, so that our body could in turn calm down too. Many of you contacted me to let me know how useful you found it, and 100% of you in a poll asked for me to share it on my podcast!

As a result, today’s episode is from that Live, and is specifically the morning routine component - focusing on the gratitude and intention setting to help us manage endometriosis and stay rooted in feelings of wellbeing despite everything that’s going on.

    In today’s episode I talk about -

    • How the brain and pain signalling works, and why stress, fear and anxiety can worsen pain levels.

    • Two of my favourite products for dealing with in the moment pain.

    • How to create a daily gratitude practice to calm down pain signals.

    • How to set an intention for your endometriosis during this difficult time.

Please note that I was Live and this episode is a recording from Facebook, so the sound quality is not amazing - but we’ve done the best we can with it!

  • A Meditation for Endometriosis

In this episode, mindfulness teacher Kate McGoey takes us through a calming meditation for endometriosis.

I know it’s been a rough few weeks through COVID19 and stress, anxiety and fear can all lead to heightened pain signals, so a few Saturdays ago I held an Instagram Live where I took us all through a calming morning routine to reduce and anxiety, wrap our brain in safety signals and thus ease pain.

So many of you have said to me that you loved the live and I asked if you’d like it in a permanent podcast episode, and you all said yes! So I’m splitting it up into a few chunks as it was a long 2 hours, and I’m starting with this conversation and mindfulness meditation for pain from Kate.

In this episode, Kate and I talk about -

    • How the stress of COVID19 can affect our wellbeing and our endometriosis pain levels

    • How meditation can change our experience of pain

    • And Kate takes us through a beautiful meditation you can actually try out whilst you’re listening to this episode!

Please note that Kate and I were Live on Instagram, and this episode is a recording from Facebook, so the sound quality is not amazing - but we’ve done the best we can with it!
