  • #319: Practice Makes Imperfect

We try not to be too hard on ourselves around here, but occasionally we have to acknowledge the truth of our mediocrity. In that vein, Bobby, Meredith and Ann are discussing the things we’re no good at, no matter how hard we try. From athletics to food prep to animal discipline, we just keep making the effort and hoping we’ll somehow get different results. Plus, Meredith is watching (new to her) classic movies, Bobby went to listen to a washed up public servant, and this show is not about AI, all evidence to the contrary.

  • #318: TSHE Classic — You Don’t Have to Be Drunk to Go to Arby’s

We’re opening the TSHE Vault this Halloween Week for a fast food classic from June 16, 2024. (Original episode #246.) Plus: A new bonus installment of Bobby Tries It So You Don’t Have To™ that’s very much on theme.

How we wrote it up last summer:

Last week’s episode turned out to be kind of a heavy one, so this week we decided to do a “quick and breezy” show about fast food. Are you a McD’s or a BK household? How does one authentically pronounce Whataburger? Where do Chipotle, Tim Horton’s and Dunkin fall on the fast food scale? And about that Subway bread…. Numerous tangents include: “onion” rings, Marty the Stop & Shop surveillance robot, and bagels (several times). Plus, Hillary’s diner nightmare, Ann is a conscientious objector to the chicken sandwich wars, and whether Bobby is a mac daddy or a daddy mac.

  • #317: “You Wanna Walk Nowhere Together?”

This week, grown adults Meredith, Hillary, Bobby and Ann gather to tackle one of life’s great questions: How do we—again, grown adults—make friends? Where do we go? What do we do? And how do we not know the answer and yet somehow know Meetup is not the answer?

We just want to be in someone’s Top 8.

  • #316: Apple Butter Jeans

Your TSHE crew has been all over the place the past few weeks (both geographically and metaphysically), so we thought it was a great time for another edition of a SMALL TALK SPECTACULAR!! Some topics include: a Bible review (sorta kidding), a mousening update, Hillary’s perceived doppelganger, an apple filled weekend, and a fun journey into American healthcare. We, of course, get into some tangents - an Ed Hochuli appreciation corner, surviving Rutherford B. Hayes, and an appearance from the alternate Robert Pape!

  • #315: TSHE Classic – Baby Got a Lotta Nostalgia

The TSHE crew is out and about this week, so please enjoy this classic episode from September 24, 2023.

The music we listen to in our youth stamps an imprint on our souls, whether we want it to or not. So, Hillary, Meredith, and Ann are heading back to the 90s to revisit some of the (mostly) one-hit wonders that still live in the recesses of our brains. Mediocre musicianship, uninspired composition, and narrow vocal range aside, these tunes are catchy, y’all. Which song (surprisingly) passes the Bechdel test? Whose parents schlepped her to two mediocre concerts in two days? Which Audrey Hepburn classic was actually the inspiration for a radio juggernaut? Plus, an OJ update, palm tree hair, and Wilford Brimley-related trauma.

  • #314: We are pie-curious!

Bakers: Welcome to Pi(e) Week! It’s episode 314, and unlike when we blew past our chance to pay tribute to the band 311, there was no chance we could let 314 go by without talking pi(e). Be careful if you’re hungry as most of this episode is about food, though we do take a few minutes to talk math, Bobby’s whereabouts from the last couple of weeks, and your thoughts on etiquette faux pas.

    TSHE Recommends

The same movie seemingly everyone else is talking about this week.

(No, not that one, though Hillary will probably recommend that one soon enough.)

  • #313: “You Gotta Think of the Collective Sometimes”

Today the Coven is putting on our advice columnist hats as we discuss the mysteries of manners and etiquette. What is the social lubricant that helps us keep the good will of our friends and neighbors? Honestly, it all boils down to being aware that you’re not the only person in the world. We spend an inordinate amount of time puzzling over the intricacies of table manners, the geographic component of saying hi to strangers, and the tricky timing of door-holding. Also on the docket this episode: Rory’s artistic weekend, the Return of the Mousening, and Meredith Regrets the Error.

  • #312: Do You Think Ludacris likes Lutefisk?

Do you dream about a big pile of brisket? A hot dish? A corned beef egg roll? Well, do we have a show for you! Today the Coven (™) is talking about all our favorite and least favorite regional delicacies! Come for the Tex Mex, stay for the lingonberries and Detroit style pizza!

In small talk, Hillary describes her Monday night concert going experience. Teens, tweens, and toddlers screaming for a kid named Malachi? Sure! Also, Meredith has an exciting time on a new (to her) mode of transportation. And our guy, Bear, has a big birthday! Cats - they grow up so fast!

  • #311: I Wasn’t Listening Hard Enough

All aboard the Orient Express as the TSHE book club reconvenes to discuss a famous mystery classic by Agatha Christie. How did we feel about Hercule Poirot and his little grey cells? Pretty good, it turns out. He’s “not a punk” like Sherlock Holmes, so he’s got that going for him. Plus, Bobby dips into garbage talk, Ann resolves her car dilemma, and we’ve got lots of ED (emergency department) stories from the listeners.

  • #310: Paul Reiser and The Other Guy

We’re no Dr. Robbys or Nurse Danas, but your TSHE hosts have had some times in emergency rooms (departments?) and urgent cares and let’s just say - experiences vary! From glorious vomiting (sorry) to head staples (again, sorry), we will thrill you with our medical tales of woe.

In confusing news, we have a detailed discussion about the Uncrustaburger at the Minnesota State Fair (as pictured above). What’s going on here? We continue to discuss TV dads (some of them are…bad) and their beautiful late 80s/early 90s hair. Also, the NY Times Customer service continues to not be the NY Times of customer service (thanks, Luke Burbank)!

PSA - Next week! We’re continuing the TSHE Book Club with Murder on the Orient Express!
