  • Take Back Your Life and Change the Conversation: At Home (Part 2) EP83

Hello, Podsters! It’s the most wonderful time…. of the year. And for some of us it’s the most time-consuming, overcommitting, and energy-draining time of the year, too. It’s so easy to overextend and blow off boundaries in pursuit of that people-pleasing itch, especially with the pressure of the holidays.

    Here’s the thing:

Ever notice what happens when we pour all your energy into others? We get tired, dim our spark, and forget to show up for ourselves.

    I’ve got you, Podsters!

Here’s what I do when I feel this happening.

My go-to move for managing my energy is to avoid overcommitting in the first place and here’s how you can too:

When making plans, or agreeing to give your time to something, think about how you'll THEN, at the actual time of the event, not how you feel at the moment you are being asked.

Already drowning in holiday happenings and commitments? Here’s how you can take back your life. It’s simple. Cancel. Yes, cancel or postpone.

Need help with what to say? Try these scripts:

    · “I’m overcommitted, and I want to make sure I’m fully focused on you. Can we plan to do this on X date instead?”

    · “I’m sorry I didn’t think this through when I confirmed these plans. I’m not going to be able to make it. Thank you for understanding. “

    · “I’ve been out every night this week and I need time to regroup and refocus. I’d love for you to go to the party without me and I look forward to hearing all about it when you get home!”

When you give away all your energy, you can't show up as your best self. And that’s not fun for anyone.

So Podsters, are you ready to switch up the conversation at home?

  • Change the Conversation: At Work (Part 1) EP81

Buckle up, Podsters, for part one of a three-part series about how to change the conversation to change your life!

Spoiler alert: my new book (“with the title Change the Conversation, Change Your Life”) is coming out in Q1 so hop on the [Pre-launch list HERE] to be the first to get your signed copy!

Today we dive into the transformative power of changing the conversation at work and how this will significantly impact your rise in the workplace.

Words matter, and the words we choose at work have a profound impact on when, how, and if we are included. From fostering positive communication to addressing microaggressions, language plays a pivotal role in shaping our workplace experiences, which in turn inspires inclusion to drive positive change.

There’s a lot to unpack here as we discuss unconscious bias and microaggressions and how to address these real-life scenarios to ensure a more inclusive environment.

Changing the conversation goes beyond words; it requires action. We explore tangible steps to take, both individually and collectively, to drive positive change.  From mentorship to allyship, discover how small actions can lead to significant shifts in workplace dynamics and, more importantly, in how YOU are showing up.

My hope is that today's episode inspires you to change the conversations in your professional life. Remember, change starts with each one of us.

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3, where we talk about the conversations we are having at home and, most importantly, the conversations we are having with ourselves.

Buckle up, Podsters; we're about to talk stress, pain, and peak performance, and specifically how these are all related. Our guest, Dr. Audra Lance, joins us today to help us thrive through the holidays because it's not normal to not feel good.

You know all too well that when December hits, overcommitting begins. Parties, catching up with old friends, family time, spreading joy—it's a whirlwind. Today we hear a few practical and actionable tips from Dr. Audra on how to avoid holiday stress: listen to your body, pay attention to your feelings, and maybe, just maybe, say no.

Remember, YOU get to choose who gets your energy. YOU decide when to slow down or when to stop.

Here’s something to think about: The stress in your life affects more than just your mind. Stress could be what’s behind your physical pain and managing stress = managing pain.
Three tips from the Doctor on how to remain centered and present this week, next week and if you try all of these: for most of the time.

    ‌
1 A 30-second practice is Dr. Audra's go-to for letting go of stress in the middle of the day. Step outside or sit in your car alone, feel the sunlight on your face, and take a few deep breaths for 30 seconds. It's a simple yet powerful way to hit pause, calm your nerves, and regain focus. You’re important. Take this time for yourself!

2 Setting boundaries is essential for everything in life, from work commitments to social engagements. Being mindful of your body and not overcommitting are keys to self-care, especially during hectic times like the holidays. Keeping these boundaries requires saying no when necessary.

3 Mindful breathing is a powerful tactic for managing stress, pain, and overall well-being. It's simple, and it works wonders. Consider this a free way to calm your nervous system and boost your health.

Stress and pain are real, Podsters and they are mostly under your control.
Make those 30 seconds count, set some boundaries, and breathe your way to well-being.

    Happy Holidays!

  • Work Less, Sleigh Hard: A Professional’s Handbook for Holiday Zen EP78

It’s time, Podsters!  December is upon us and this week’s episode if exactly what you need to finish the year, whatever way you choose.  Do you want to finish strong? Great.  Do you prefer to ease up and enjoy all the joy which comes with the holiday season? Also great.

Here’s the thing Podsters: we are all about action over here at Unmute Yourself the Podcast and this week I’m making the case for inaction.  That’s right.  Deferring action.  Deciding how you want to spend the next 30 or so days, and finishing the year soft, sane, and slow.

Why the pivot?  This past weekend, many of my friends slowed down to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday. We did not get on a plane to cram in one more work trip, we did not rise early and grind all day and we did not “FINISH STRONG”.  Instead, we took time to enjoy everything the start of our holiday season has to offer.  For me, that meant a significant amount of time walking on the beach, too much time on the couch and lazy afternoons doing nothing.

And here's what I noticed.  I witnessed a big change in how those around me were showing up.  I saw my friends become more vibrant and live healthier by deliberately slowing down.  I could hear it in their voice and see it on their faces.  And I saw myself revel in taking it slow which is something I rarely do.

I get it, Podsters: It’s go time.  I know that December is the Super Bowl of business.  Wrapping up contracts, planning to “hit the ground running in January, financial close outs – all the things.

So, I'm proposing three things to end your year with ease.

    1. Reflect on 2024: What do you want more, less, or the same? Start living that way now and you’ll finish the year with YOUR meaning of strong.

    2. Block some time the first two weeks of January for focused business planning.

    3. Embrace the power of "no." No overcommitting, no overextending or a simple, “no thank you.”

    4. Life isn't meant to be a constant grind and we finish the year however we choose to do so.

So, Podsters, my wish for you is to end the year strong, on your terms, and with EASE.

    5. I’m grateful AND…How to Bypass Toxic Gratitude EP77

The Season of Thankfulness is upon us and I want to talk with you about a the concept of “Toxic Gratitude”.

Last Thanksgiving, I was strolling on the beach, and I was overcome with this incredible wave of gratitude. There are so so so many things to be grateful for and in that moment I was feeling all of them. After a few minutes, I started thinking about what I wanted for myself and my business in the coming year. Where I wanted to grow my business, how I wanted to live my life, how I wanted to show up. I could have let that shame cycle of "I already have so much; why do I want more when others have less?" take hold, but I didn’t.

I thought to myself: I’m incredibly grateful AND ALSO… I want more for my life.

So what is toxic gratitude, and what does it have to do with my epiphany on the beach that day? And why am I bringing this idea to you now?

Toxic gratitude is gratitude that is either shaming, manipulating or even in some cases: gaslighting. It is gratitude that is being used either on you or by you to manipulate behavior.

I caught this idea on a Mel Robbins podcast, and it really resonated with me. Here are three ways toxic gratitude can show up in your life:

      • The first is when you focus on gratitude and avoid the big mess in front of you.

      • Second is when this gratitude causes you to stay stuck, like in a loveless marriage or unfulfilling job.

      • Third, you put yourself down after an accomplishment by saying, "I'm just lucky, “I’m incredibly grateful that I was chosen for…”

      • Try this instead: say, "I'm grateful and also..." and then see what comes up. Perhaps nothing. Maybe you’re grateful, and that’s all. Awesome!

Or, if you immediately think about something after the ALSO, this is what you know you truly want in your core, and it could be what you are avoiding.

I am incredibly grateful for each and every one of you who has helped to build his powerful community. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
