Saint Patrick... lived during the fifth century, is, of course, the patron saint of Ireland… And Legend has it that Patrick was brought to Ireland by pirates who kidnapped him when he was 16 years old! He was enslaved but eventually escaped and then later returned and was credited with bringing Christianity to to the people of Ireland… Legend has stood on an Irish hillside and delivered a sermon that drove the island’s serpents into the sea. Apparently there are no snakes on the Emerald Isle which is fascinating to me! Another legend is that Patrick used the Irish clover to explain the holy trinity which gave us the iconic Irish shamrock that we see so often today. Of course Saint Patrick’s Day has evolved into more oof a secular holiday over the centuries.
Fun fact… The first St. Patrick’s day parade was actually held in America… And yall know we love a good parade! So many of the ancestors of Irish Americans had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudice to survive and gain some measure of acceptance in the New World.
So many people in this country are still fighting stereotypes and racial prejudices.
I can’t help but think about the hate crime committed against the asian Americans in Atlanta last night. Prejudice rooted in American history that leads to violence…. It’s a familiar story.
IMO there is absolutely no weapon that brings peace. There just isn’t. And what I think I have failed to understand until this past year is that The retouch of extremist, racist, and hate groups are weapons. Make no mistake ideas that devalue another person or a group of people are weapons. These are the ideas that groom and move people to commit acts of terrorism in their own country against their fellow citizens. It ain’t cute. It ain’t brave. And it sure as hell isn’t patriotic.
Pay attention to the ideas you give your energy to. Pay attention to the ideas of the people around you.
Remember, there is no epics to small to be heard! ❤️
