  • About Name Days in French
    Jour de fête et prénom
Part of All Levels | French Culture
    What is your name day?
Every day, the Catholic calendar on the kitchen wall of many French people, suggests celebrating a saint, and all the people who have that same first name at the same time. It’s your name day.
At the very beginning, Christians celebrated the anniversary of the death of a martyr in the name of Christ. Saints are supposed to protect either a person with the same first name, or a city, region or profession. For example, the patron saint of Brittany is “Saint Yves”. He is also the patron saint of the legal profession. So, on May 19, people called Yves – or Erwan – and lawyers celebrate Saint Yves with a big celebration.
Your name day is almost like your birthday. People greet you with “Bonne fête!” and they give you a small gift, flowers, or a cake at home or at work.

    Find YOUR name day 🙂
