The posse immediately assumes Jack was Corey's accomplice since he waited outside during the crime, but Miss Gale insists the young drifter is innocent. As the townspeople form a pursuit party, Jack flees with Corey into the hills, trying to understand what happened.

When a letter finally arrives directing him to drive his herd to Abilene for top prices, Lafe sets out immediately with his foreman Whitey and crew. However, Colonel from the nearby fort plants seeds of doubt, reminding Lafe that Nate once loved Martha—the woman Lafe married—and holds the mortgage on Lafe's ranch.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto's stage robberies were actually attempts to intercept fraudulent correspondence, and their suspicions prove correct when Tonto discovers damning evidence in the bunkhouse. A hidden letter reveals that Whitey has been secretly working for Nate, following orders that threaten to ruin Lafe's entire cattle operation and cost him everything he owns. The masked rider must act quickly to save Lafe from his brother's treacherous scheme.

However, Jet anticipates the lawman's approach and ambushes him in a desolate area near Plainfield. Instead of killing the marshal, Jet hatches an ingenious plan: he forces Miller to exchange clothes with him, takes his badge and official papers, and decides to pose as the marshal himself while making Miller appear to be the wanted outlaw.
The situation becomes even more audacious when Jet discovers that wealthy Kansas rancher Randolph has posted a thousand-dollar reward for his capture. Jet realizes he can collect his own reward by bringing Miller into town as the supposed criminal. The Lone Ranger, learning of the marshal's manhunt from Tonto, adopts a disguise and enters Plainfield just as Jet arrives with his prisoner, ready to perpetrate this brazen fraud on the unsuspecting sheriff.
